I hate being dumber than a duck

It’s 9 degrees outside and ducks with tiny little brains have already flown south for the winter!  

The bus has no heat because it’s got a great big radiator and really efficient.   ( plus they have no insulation). My left knee is burning up because that’s where the heater outlet is, while my feet are frozen. Frozen as in having ice on my shoes.  

There is no excuse.  My daughter works for an airline so I can fly free where and whenever. As retired military I could even fly with them wanted to.  It’s not like I won’t get my retirement or social security if I don’t endure the cold.  

I was hoping to retire somewhere a little south of here.  Maybe not GA / FL south, but somewhere milder.  Found out the other evening during discussion that DW is thinking somewhere like Connecticut.  Hoo boy.

Cold and rust are things I don't understand.  Fly south.

Preparedness.

Frenchy, I was up in your neck of the woods the past couple days. The weather on Tuesday was pretty strange. A high in the low to mid 60's and a low of 19F. That was some temperature swing. At least MN is not on fire like SoCal.

On behalf of intelligent ducks everywhere, I vehemently protest the title of this thread!

The ducks are in JG's yard now, they seem to be having a good time

By me (in Barbados) we're having a delayed tourist season apparently, meaning that rooms are unusually cheap right now, and you don't even have to pay airfare which is the most expensive part. Only way you'll ever be cold here is if you hang out in a supermarket's frozen foods aisle. Racing season's not entirely over yet either, If you hurry you can catch a track day and dexterity this weekend.

There are ducks here too, I remember a year or two ago one got hit in a stage rally and another duck came and mourned over it. Then the dead duck was BBQ'd and eaten at the finish. It's the ciiiircle of liiiife

Unpossible: Nobody has ever retired to Connecticut. Even the rich people leave.

I can think of few places in the States that I would rather live in less.  But I think she's picturing quaint little towns more than anything... and summers that are not brutally hot and humid.  She's easily overheated.

I'm retiring in Costa Rica or maybe Panama in about 10 to 15 years. Yall have fun though!

Barbados?  Seriously?  Spent 3 months a few years back island hopping the carribean.  Barbados was one of my favorites of the 22 islands I hit....especially when I stumbled on a bunch of vintage race/rally cars.  Also enjoyed tearing around the island in a rented mini-moke.

Do a search on states with the highest taxes...  and then maybe she'll rethink her idea.  

And CT gets about as brutally hot and humid as any other mid-Atlantic state.

WORLD'S GREATEST DUCK RECIPE

Rinse duck in water. Pat dry with paper towels.

Salt and pepper.

Stuff chest cavity with dried apricots and orange slices.

Place ceramic brick on center rack of oven.  Preheat oven to 475 °.

Place duck breast side up on brick.

Bake 5 hours.

Remove brick and duck from oven.  Let stand for 15 minutes.

Throw away duck carcass.  Eat brick.

Heresy. Cassoulet is amazing and it almost always has duck in it. You eat the brick, I'll have some cassoulet.

With 10 months a year of motorsports events weather.  The other 2 months would be considered acceptable to anyone in the north, but we think it's cold.

In east TN, a perfect year is 2 small snows and about six weeks of "cold" weather.  (Our cold weather means that if your're from the UP you would need to down a sixer before swimming in the lake.)

We get seasons and a few truly cold snaps.  Otherwise it's sunny and in the mid-40s for highs during the coldest months.  And no rust.  And no mill rate or state income taxes.  

Actually, it's terrible here.  Forget I said anything.   ;)

I spent a month or so there a while back, and it seemed that, any time I tried to go back roading, all the speed limit signs said 35.

High taxes are a good thing!  If you look the states with highest taxes have the highest per- capital income.   In other words you make more money than states with no taxes, even after paying taxes

Grew up in Mass. lived 40+ years in DC area. Hate the cold. Retired to NC near Chapel Hill. Couple of hours from coast. Couple of hours from mountains. Great driving roads and mild winters. Also about an hour from VIR. Great state for car nuts.
