If you want to learn about drum brakes try an Alfa 1600 Gulia. Fronts are huge and have 3 of everything (shoes, wheel cylinders, etc.)

I've done the drums on my pickup and don't really get all the animosity towards them. There isn't that much going on, I did have to take them apart and adjust them a few times but once set it is pretty easy. The big issue is lubing up the star adjuster so it moves freely.
If you have to do the brake discs and seperately inspect/adjust the parking brake setup disc brakes don't really save that much time over drums.
