I have always wondered. If your car is totaled and in addition to the value of the car does insurance pay tax title and registration costs for a new vehicle?

Here in MA this can add. I just registered a new to me $10,000 vehicle and tax title and registration was almost $1,000. Not a trivial amount of money. Is this cost covered by insurance or are you SOL with respect to these costs when replacing a vehicle?

I am actually going to ask my insurance agent this when I get back from vacation but I figured I would ask here as some one must know how this is handled.

I believe when my Saturn was totaled a year ago, they paid tax title and reg in addition to the value of the car (which was not much). This was in MA. Of course, my memory is not so good, YMMV, etc etc

Yes, they will pay tax, title, registration if it's totaled.

It'll be much later tonight before I'm able to grab it, but I'm happy to help. Have a meeting with our new home builder in 90 minutes then the kids have football practice tonight... I did a lot of exotic/high end car damage claims.

Also, while I am not sure about MA in most states I have lived if the car is replaced you can apply the remainder of the registration on it to the new car. Taxes work that way in some states too. So here if it cost $200 to register a car and I drove it 3 months before it got totaled and replaced I could put $150 of the first car's registration towards the replacement.

SC lets you transfer the plates to the new car with no fees.

In ma there are two taxs. Sales and excise. I was manley talking about sales tax. Since you have to purchase a replacement car you pay sales tax on that purchase. That is the tax I was wondering about. Excise tax is paid to the town you live in. This is not an issue as it will be prorated so you would only pay for the time you have it registered.

Title fee is $100 I think. New to you car gets new title and you have to pay this fee.

Registration fee is somthing like $50. Transfer the plates versus getting new ones is about a $5 difference. My agent recommends new plates so there is no confusion in the DMV computers.
