I lift weights at the local YMCA about 5 days per week. There's usually the same small group of guys there and we shoot the breeze between sets. One of these fellas is a drag racer who knows another guy with a caged '88 Mustang that was used as an 11 second bracket car but has been sitting in his morton building for a few years. It is currently sans engine and transmission but is otherwise complete.
I've been making subtle inquiries over the past couple of weeks and today the guy said, "$1,200.".
Supposedly it's rust free and has a "Big cowl hood."
I'll be carving out some time to look at it soon, then possibly dragging it home and cursing myself for my maddening addiction to Foxbodys.
Pics and parts requests will most likely ensue shortly.
Somehow I went from shopping for hybrids and ev's to this...
And $800 worth of LS swap is easily found in your neighborhood!
I'm waiting for the foolish part.
Sounds like you should get it home already.
There might even be a wrecked Mustang with a Voodoo engine to drop in it by now... One can dream.

In reply to John Brown:
You are correct! Last night I found a 4.8 for $650 and a 5.3 for $750. Drivetrain options have been swirling in my head for the past few days. I've found several 302's in the $100-$200 range and some 351's for a bit more. A co-worker has a '93 Cobra long block (probably high $) and a few 460's just laying around.
Then there's the 4.6/4R70W that sitting between my Crown Vic's fenders...
I vote do it! I would even be willing to make a weekend trip to help the build next year. I am about 4 hours from you.
Skip the 93 cobra motor, it's not that special unless you want to restore a cobra.

Wow, that's awesome! Your offer is greatly appreciated! I'll keep you posted.
This decision should take you approximately 11 seconds.

So why is the build thread not up yet?
460 and gravel. It will only go in a straight line well, but it will be ridiculous amounts of fun.
and you really should post the pics of it in your driveway.

Which is 10.8 seconds of trying to figure out how to tell the significant other.

"Something irretrievably foolish"... like making the Mustang midengined with a SBF and an Audi transaxle?
In reply to The_Jed:
You know what this needs, a Ford 3.0L SHO V6 with some boost! I happen to have one with most of the things to make it run and a manual trans from a 3.0L ranger that will last for a few minutes behind that combo. Delivered for cheap plus fuel money.

That would be referred to as "reaction time".

This thread is it. The_Jed should've bought the car, dragged it home, then started a build thread.

Irretrievably foolish, like let someone buy it out from under you?

If you buy it, then drive the 5.5 hours up here, I'll sell you a 2.0 zetec and a 4 speed for a grand total of $200.

Considering his SWMBO is also a board member, she may have found out about it before he made it home.
