With a trailer in the fleet now, I need a grease gun. In the past, I always bought the large version that you put the whole grease tube in. The latest trip to Lowes brought to light some small versions. It would be nice to take with me on the trips that are planned, but how messy will loading these little things? Worth the trouble?
Does the trailer have bearing buddies? Might not need a gun on trips.

The M3 grease gun never really caught on:

Oh, THAT kind of grease gun. Do you really need to grease stuff in the middle of a tow? Can't you just grease it before you start out? I've got several. The small kind is OK to load. I mean, you're gonna get greasy no matter what you do when you work with these things. I prefer the pneumatic HF ones.

I have a full-size gun because reloading is pretty clean. I take the old tube out with the whole bun in a grocery bag. Then I wipe the gun off and load a new tube in. I went with the pistol grip type gun because it's one-handed. I need one hand to keep the hose on the nipple, and the other hand to pump (stop it you sickos!).

I used to use those, then I became annoyed with it. The Milwaukee saves me more time greasing everything than I could have imagined(its also one handed
)
I can never load any grease gun without making a mess.
Correspondingly, when I load a large grease gun, I make a very large mess. When I load a small grease gun, I make a smaller mess. But it's a mess no matter what.
I like the small ones myself. I've always found the big ones awkward and messy to work with. I am much more successful with the smaller ones.

I can't remember why the heck I tried, or the circumstances around it, but I reloaded my grease gun in a suit once. Yes, I had to wash my hands, but the suit was grease free.
