But I'm going to go look at one anyway.
The long version of the story (as far as it's gotten so far) is that I saw a '76 Vega with a for sale sign in the window a couple months back.
It's white with holstein decal rolled down the sides and holstein seat covers on the front seats. The guy seems to be an in the Ag department at the local university...I think he digs dairy cows.
Other than the bovine aftermarket stuff it appears strikingly stock.
I called the nice gentleman because I was interested in old Vegas (at one time) and was mostly curious. Ten years ago I could think of NOTHING else except to have a completly restomodded vega daily driver with a 350 tpi, T5, A/C, etc.
Fast forward a couple of months and the owner is calling ME telling me he really needs to sell this car. "I was asking $1,000, but I'm just ready to sell it...make me an offer."
I really HOPE this thing has massive amounts of rust so I won't want it.
I'm broke, but can clear out some projects if this thing could be had for $300 or something.
It runs...sheesh...
Like a hole in the head, I tell you...like a hole in the head I need this thing.
Yeah...so if I end up with this thing, I'll be fishing for trades shortly thereafter.
If someone here is SERIOUSLY in the market for a '76 Vega...get in touch with me and I'll pass along a good deal. The only thing I really care to gain from that situation would be NOT OWNING a(nother) rusty old project

$300 sounds like a steal. As long as it doesn't run too fast for you to catch.
Yes, it does need more LS1
No, I don't have any business having any part of this.

Just to clarify, $300 is my "I don't want a Vega but for this price, I HAVE to find a way to buy it" pricepoint.
I'm leaving to look at it in 3, 2, 1...

I once owned a Vega. They are/were okay cars, but nowadays it would have to be TOTALLY rust free for me to waste ANY time and gas going to look at it. And since there are almost no rust-free Vegas....I don't have to worry about wasting my time or money. Now a rust-free Monza,Starfire, Sunbird? Maybe.
That's funny, because I'd much rather have the more mundane and less "stylized" vega.
I looked at it...I don't really want it...but it could be good trading fodder. He "take" $500 for it. I'm going to "let it brew." Typically, that works well with a motivated seller.
It has good Lemons potential...it comes with a theme.
Seriously, this is a mistimed good-ish deal. I'd be happy to help hook someone else up with it. let me know if there's interest.

if you had posted this about a month ago, i would have been all over it. i'd rather have a $500 Vega that looks like a cow than the Camaro i got.. i've got all the goodies to put a V8 in a Vega, just need a solid car..
wanna trade even up for an 86 Camaro?
I'm glad you're a long way away.
Good thing you're not close. That would rock with the supercharged Miata drivetrain I'll be discarding soon.
I noticed a stripped Cosworth Vega not too far from me recently.
I once had a 305v8 powered vega. I sold it because I could not change the right rear spark plug without removing the engine. I was younger then... I should have cut a door in the firewall. It was stupid fast, fun and not old enough to have rusted to dust (1983).
If you find a good Pinto, call me.
(unbelieveable . . . .)
^^ Ditto. I had a 79. I regret to this day selling it. For $400.

Please no. There are far too few Vegas left to subject one to Lemons treatment.

I WOULD have found a way to come up with money if this was a pinto.
