Yesterday, Margie, David and I were having lunch at a local Middle Eastern establishment, and a particularly clean one of these drives by:

Those lines, those proportions, really do a lot for me, and did back in the day as well. Oddly enough, I've never driven one, and I almost never want to , as i can't imagine it would ever live up to my memories of being a 15-year-old lusting after something other than a car ending in "i."

Still cool, though.

There's an older guy near me who owns a perfect, unrestored maroon 1985 Supra. He also owns one of the next generation. The odd thing is that he doesn't seem like a car guy at all and doesn't even have a garage. The '85 stays outside year round in Connecticut and it still looks like new.

The thing about those cars that made the biggest impression on me as a kid was how tight all of the parts fit together. Toyota's quality from ~85 to ~94 was remarkable.

What the man says is true. And yes, I got up to look at it. (My seat was facing into the restaurant, not towards the front.) By the way, that gyro was good as hell.

Ha! I actually looked up "gyro" last night to see what's in them. I've never had one before, but I think the next time I order lunch from the Greek place I'm gonna try one.

A local guy had one since new for many years - right up until he traded it for a then-new MR Spyder, crushing my dreams of owning his Supra. A couple years ago he traded the Spyder in on a new Camry.

He got a new C6 Vette a couple weeks later. 8)

I've always loved these too but I drove the 4 door version. Great torque from the 2.8 I6 and third gear just pulled for days. Had a friend with this model Supra and I could always outdrag him as I think the Cressida actually weighed less. There was a very clean example of this model for sale near me recently and I would always avert my eyes as I drive by to not be tempted.

Always liked them. Would love to test drive one.

I see 4 or 5 of them every day, but most seem to be ragged around the edges.

Those didn't impress me too much - at least not in plain Celica trim - at the time, but they have aged pretty darn well. Too bad there are about 10 left on the planet that don't look like moldy swiss cheese.

I like them. The lines remind me of an 8 series, although these came first. A friend of mine had one for awhile and I helped him wrench on it a few times. Never got to drive it though.

the only issue I know of about them... was the hatch loved to rust. Guy I worked with back in 1990 had one.. so it could have only been a few years old.. the bottom of the hatch was completely gone

I was gonna say, "4 door version? huh?" but then I realized that my wifey's car is sorta the 4-door version of the mk4 supra so why not! (She's got the GS300)

i test drove one while i was inbetween high-school and college, circa 1996.

first i had to convince the salesman it wasn't a V6, even as we stood there with the hood up (why are all the plugs in a row then smart guy).

it did not feel meaningfully faster than the '81 200SX I already owned. and handled worse.

then i got t-boned in it.

what was the question again?

There is a farily nice looking one running around town here owned by a young guy who works at one of the local autoparts stores. I see it parked out front a couple times a week. I don't get the chance to go talk to him as it is a competeing store to the one SWMBO works for.

I pass a house that has 2 of these on my way to work. Not bad looking, but for the most part 80's japanese cars do very little for me.

LSx?

In 1982 I was a 15yo paperboy and one of my customers bought a brand new Supra. Bright red in colour. It was instant love. Then another customer bought a RX-7 and the fight for my affection was on. I guess the rotary won because in 1984 I got rid of my hand me down green 4 door Dart and picked up a 1979 RX-7. My dating record improved dramatically overnight.

It's probably weird, but I think of all the Supras, I prefer the 2nd gen. But, I have never driven one, and I'm not starting a savings account to buy one in the future. I'd rather own a nice 2nd gen Celica before I went looking for a Supra. But having driven one, albeit with automatic, I'd only want it for nostalgic reasons and because they are nice looking cars...even today. Unfortunately, most have rusted away.

Nay, the 2nd gen is my preferred Supra. Third gen got too dang fat, and the fourth was not much better, and I can't say I like the look of it either. Add F&F, OMG 2JZ!, Drift and Drag taxes, and they are holding their value pretty dang well around where I live though, so that also puts them out of my budget even if I wanted one.

I've thought about digging up a clean A6 Supra for a DD. I keep running into the same conundrum. The E Stock MR2 is my DD, and my wife and son autocross it. I autocross Tom Celica. We have the 4Runner for snow and autocross support. Then my wife's car. And, of course, the Capri in the garage. So, if I get a cool DD like that, something has to go. The MR2? What will they autocross? The 4Runner? It's way too useful. The Capri and Tom Celica aren't going anywhere.

It's a Quandary. Nice car, the Quandary. Sporty, yet gets good mileage...

My cousin bought a Supra like that new. Black on black. He still has it and still loves it. I haven't seen it for years so I don't know what kind of condition it's in, but knowing Ian it's both pampered and driven.
