I doubt you could fit in the trunk with all your hockey gear, but if you ever do get jammed into a Miata trunk there is that little trunk release handle in there, just make sure you can reach it before the trunk lid is closed or it's of no help.

The trunk is not very deep - so like others have said the passenger seat is where big things go.

From firsthand experience, I can tell you that hockey and golf bags go in the passenger seat, and my hockey bag is a tough fit. your stick can be left hanging out the window. I'm 5'11", 30" inseam, 190 lb. and I needed the foamectomy in my NB. I needed it on the 1999 seats and the 1996 seats currently in it. Oh, and the hockey bag is a PITA to put in the passengewr seat with the hardtop on. And as for the guys that say it's not a great DD, they're right. When I go to play hockey or golf I normally take the Astro.

If you remove the spare tire on an NA, you can fit two golf bags in there.

As long as you're not Rodney Dangerfield.

A) The foamectomy. I would need one without a doubt-I'm 5'11" with a 28' or 29' inseam. Headroom is a problem in every car. Is it easy to screw this up? B) The trunk. Could I fit a hockey bag in it? C) The other trunk. I mean the passenger seat. Could a hockey stick fit in there? I assume it would, but its been a close call in other cars before. No other concerns right now, but this is obviously my go to place so I'll come here with more if I get them.

wow, I'm kind of surprised by some of the answers.

No idea for A- I'm 5 10, and sound like I'm opposite.

B) yes, without a doubt. I played hockey up until about 5 years ago, and a Miata has been my only car for 12 years now. It may take a little careful planning, and moving around, but with out a shred of doubt, you CAN fit all of your hockey gear in both the NA (did for 2 years) and an NB (did for 7 years).

C) again, yes- sticks will fit fine. I even drove to lunch with a passenger + sticks. It's a little bit of a pain, but nothing really problematic

This is coming from a been there- done that, side. Before buying my '95 back in '97, I tested the fit before I bought the car. Just go for a test drive, and bring your stuff with you. I have a fairly un-organized bag, so everything can move around, including my skates. It's a lot easier to fit than it appears that everybody thinks.

So, repeating one more time- speaking from many years of experience, yes, hockey equipement can fit into the trunk, and your stick will fit fine in the passenger seat. But to be sure, take your stuff with you on a test drive.

For that matter, if summer is too long to wait, you're welcome to make the hour drive west to see how it fits you & your gear - though it won't be moving out of the garage anytime soon with the snow/salt on the ground.

Thanks for the offer, but I don't know that I'll be in town in the summer (although I might come for a few autox's) and I'm going to follow erics advice and just bring it to one for sale at a dealer. Either way, it doesn't matter as I'm not looking until at least August. But I get thinking about it and wish it were August, and start making sure it will work.

Thanks for the insight. This is what I was looking for. I've fit two hockey bags in an E30 convertible before, so I have to figure that I could somehow finesse a bag into a miata.
There was a time when anytime we would test drive any car, we would take 5 people, 4 hockey sticks, 2 bags, and 3 golf bags. Its sooooo much easier shopping for a car when you will be the only person in it most of the time.

Do you play forward or are you a goalie?

Neither bag I have will fit in the trunk but It can work. My bag for forward equipment is a army duffel bag so it is fairly wider then a normal bag. A standard bag might fit in the trunk but I don’t know. The stick will fit along the inner edge of the passenger seat. I always put the blade down with the bud end up. You can put the bag on the passenger seat when using player equipment.

With goalie equipment you need to put the sticks in then put the top down. After the top is down then you put the goalie bag on its side on the passenger seat then put the top back up. The larger goalie bag will not fit in and out of the car with the top up. The seat also needs to be the full way back.

In reply to ratghia:

I'm just a defense. I have a few bags I could pick from--an army duffle, a giant graf, and a jofa that I can barely fit all my stuff in.

Debbie and I have traveled extensively in our various Miata. It is easier in the summer because those clothes tend to be lighter. The best trunk in a miata is the shelf behind the seats. You only need a small sliver of rear window to see thru the mirror and so long as you protect the window material itself, you can pack quite a bit back there. Remove the spare tire from the trunk and you can get some items back there also. We have done a week during the winter when you have to take bulky clothes with no problems. We did have to leave the boxes at DSW after a side-trip on the way back.

You would be best with the bag that is bigger. If the bag is packed tightly it will be too tall laying in the trunk to led the trunk close. If it has room you can set it in the trunk then spread everything in the bag out to allow the trunk to close.
