Wish I had something to sell you just for the opportunity to meet you.
But I will say that if you find something in NC, I'll gladly offer my shop and tools to make any needed repairs before you head out on the drive back home.
And there are several of us NC guys that could put eyes on something if you find a possible candidate.
You're very gracious with that offer. That's the kind of thing that could make a deal work smoothly. Ya'll salt your roads up there though don't you ?
Not really in central NC where I'm located. They probably do in the mountains but I'm not sure. Think they put out salt a handful of times this past winter in my area. They only do it when we're supposed to get "snow" which isn't very often. I wouldn't be worried about any vehicle that has been in NC (minus the mountains) all it's life.
Biggest problem now is since the used market is so crazy, it's hard to know where something came from unless you're buying something that hasn't been driven in awhile and people just cashing in to get it out of the yard.
So not really any flapping fenders, rotted brake lines or seized suspension hardware up in your parts ?
I cannot imagine the heartache of having to do brake or suspension work on a rusty car in a motel parking lot somewhere. I figured if I bought something cool I might swing by one of the Summit Racing stores and do a little parking lot build fun on the way home. Or maybe try and score some cool wheels and tires en route from someone. Who knows...
I passed on a long box square s10 about two months ago, 4cyl, manual, running for $900. Nowhere to park it.. I generally agree Utah is expensive, but deals do pop up. If I see anything worth while locally I'll post it up.
Please do. I'm looking to do something the last week of April. I'll have about a month off from work starting then. The sooner I can figure out what I'm doing the sooner I can get a plane ticket and the cheaper it will be.

Can you give more specifics on your budget and what you are really looking for (i.e. truck, coupe, transmission, etc.)?
85 Celica - FL / $5k
I'm hoping initial buy in for 4000 or less. That gives me plenty of financial lattitude to not have to cannonball straight home (due to motel costs) and also not feel bruised too much if/when anything unexpected pops up that costs me unforseen money on the trip home.
The reason I mentioned S10s is my history of much experience with them. But I also like 240 Volvos, W123 Mercedes (I know German bad idea), pretty much any older Toyota, Honda, Datsun, Mazda etc...
In reply to Cousin_Eddie (Forum Supporter) :
Added a lot of FL listings to my post above.
This one is local to me. I can help with the logistics, tools, space to work on it and if I can convince the wife a bed.
You'd be buying from an Eddie.
S10 - $2900
Oh man.
SWIFT!
Im too far away to look at it, just on the UT/ID border. It's different. Spare parts might be tricky...

That thing is so cool. I almost had a Chevy Sprint as a first car.
I think this would be cool. Not $5K cool, but you could fill up with fryer oil to get you home.
Do I smell french fries?
I'm going to keep being patient and try to set up a deal with a known entity.
These bubbas on Facebook or Craigslist would worry me to death trying to trust them enough to fly across country with cash in my pocket. It's always a struggle with putting together deals locally right here in Fort Worth using those websites. Half a continent away is fraught with disaster. I need someone I can depend on.
Something will turn up...
In case you change your mind. $3K Baller edition.
Swanky
That is swanky. Hard top too. Radwood starter kit right there. Last time I was in St Pete I saw more homeless people than I ever have in my life all combined and I sunburned the hell out of my feet. Who knew that was a thing ? It hurt to walk for a week.

That's nice. If I wasn't full I'd ask you to check it out for me.
I'm near Knoxville TN, if anything anywhere near there turns up, and I can help facilitate another awesome Cousin Eddie build thread.
This morning I committed to Seattle and booked the flight and hotel. It makes sense to me since my stepson lives there he might be able to lend a hand if I need, depending on his schedule. Plus it's close to Portland like someone mentioned if I decided to take the train down and buy something there.
I also ordered a Pelican case and a couple of TSA locks for carrying my tools on the airplane.
Who knows what I'll wind up buying and driving home in. I'll start daily haunting the PNW Craigslist and Facebook stuff to start lining up options.
Rather than take too many tools, consider buying tools at national retailer at the start of the drive and if you do not open the tools, return them to same retailer in your home town.
In reply to John Welsh :
Absolutely. I have a tool bag that I have fine tuned over time. I'm taking a Pelican travel case as a checked bag so I've got up to 50 pounds. I have already checked and the PNW has oodles of Harbor Freights. I should be able to handle whatever happens between the two.
I've watched how Derek Bieri does it and have taken notes.

A fly and drive to buy a known car from a known seller is level 1 adventure.
unknown car or unknown seller is level 2.
unknown car *and* unknown seller is level 3.
no specific car but already booked flight is level Cousin_Eddie.

Quoted for coolness. I'm excited to see what you end up with.
Fly to Dallas, buy my Subaru!
