Here is my question:

How can I go from this: (E38 shift console pictured)

to this:

I know it is semi-easy to do if the E39 were a 530i or a 540i, but there isn't a whole lot of information about the early E39's with the 2.8 engine. I know the later ones have the "Steptronic" feature that gives you that sequential option, I want to know if it is compatible with my 4 speed trans. Would I need to get an updated TCU?

I believe the Steptronic boxes were all ZF whereas many early auto E39s had GM boxes so this may be difficult.

As many E39s I have gotten in in the last year, I haven't seen one like that. What's wrong with it?

In reply to Anti-stance:

With the sequential layout? or the PRND432 layout?

Nothing really wrong with it, just an inquiry on how much work it would require to convert to a sequential style layout.

In reply to Anti-stance:

Ah, yea. They came in early E39s. I wish Geordie would answer my questions! haha.

Ask him if he's got any stock wheels he wants to sell...

To the best of my knowledge it won't be possible since you have the early 4 speed GM trans.

Unfortunately if you have an E39 528 you have a GM transmission. It could be a GM 5speed late in the model years, but in any case, the electronics and TCM will be woefully different and no easy solution exists.
