Yep... that confirms it. I want one of those. Preferably in an extended cab or crew cab. Don't think they'll give me a crew with a 4 banger though.

Ok, so hear me out...

So you don't want a V8 because of the poor drivability in snow and other situations where too much power application could be dangerous. Completely reasonable.

What about a "War Emergency Power" style throttle? Some WWII era airplanes had a small cable that limited the throttle travel for normal operation, but in pants-E36 M3ting situations could be broken with a strong (probably panicked) shove to allow additional power for a short period of time, at the expense of engine longevity.

In reply to unevolved:"War Emergency Power" style throttle! Now that sounds like a great idea! Not just great, AWESOME!

Add a cylinder. She'll never notice.

3700cc LLR inline 5.....

V8 mileage without the power? Besides I don't think it will fit under the last generations stubby nose.

you could probably do the "war emergency power" thing with megasquirt all you would need is a button for econ and sport.. in econ, you get a lower power fuel map and in sport, you get all the engine can give. Could even label it "snow mode"

By the numbers, the 2.2 should kick all sorts of ass as a 2v engine. It has GIANT valves for an engine its size - 44mm intakes. VW guys would kill to be able to fit valves that big, 42mm is really stretching it! The ports aren't super stellar but at least they are angled half-decently with a very nice angle on the intake ports. Valve angle wise, again the V8 guys would spend many many thousands to have heads like that.

But it is in a GM and if it is in a GM then nobody at all cares about the four cylinder so nobody makes good cams or pistons or manifolds or anything for it. I sometimes get the Voices telling me to Correctly do a 2.2 with a BIG cam from someone who will do a one-off, find good rods of the right center-center and pistons to suit and grind the crank as necessary to fit the rods, make a good header and a proper intake manifold... just so I can say "Yeah, it's only got 270hp but you know how crappy those 2.2s are..."

Or you just put a cam style pulley on the throttle body so the cable pull is relatively long for the first part of travel. That does not help the problem of having all of that engine rotating mass making it hard to regain traction.

So maybe if you took the V8 and removed one head to make an odd fire four cylinder...

yeah there is very little aftermarket for the 2.2 even the early cavalier guys are mostly v6 swaps. I looked into it a little for my daily driver because its an extended cab 2.2/auto and scares me trying to merge onto highways. since the truck has been so reliable and cheap to own I thought maybe a header/intake/throttle body would help wake it up. be cheaper to small block swap it!

Yep, and a rebuild will cost the same as a V8.

I actually have the elusive vacuum advance distributor for a 2.2L that would allow for bolting on a set of side draft carbs. Before I overheated the 2.2L in my S10 I was planning on keeping it after the V8 swap and putting it in an Opel.

the 2.2 isn't a "bad" engine, it's just not a huge powerhouse. Think of the mini trucks of the 70's, they had less than 100hp. Probably drove about the same.

The 2.2: It's not stellar but it's a hell of a lot better than the 2.5. The 2.5's super ability was the the ability to shake and buzz, and leak from every gasket surface. The 2.2 at least doesn't shake as much and they mostly solved the leakage problems. And it has a cylinder head that looks like it was designed in the 20th century!

Little known fact: "Iron Duke"? Look up the word "dukey" sometime.

I would skip the Chinese turbochargers and go with a used turbo from a factory performance car or a used Garrett or Turbonetics turbo. You want the better engineered turbo parts.

I figure if they're good enough for 300 hp or so on a 1.6 Miata, (albeit kind of laggy) that is beaten on. A sedately driven 2.8 or 2.9 should spin it up rather nicely. Kept to a realistic 8-10lbs of boost it should live happily for a good while. @ <200$ it's hard to argue with, even if I have to take it down and bevel the waste gate port, and port a few parts. V band connectors are a bonus as well.

Why all the hate on the Iron duke? I had a few S10's with them and they did the job admirably. It was a relic, but it was reliable, made OK power and if you want aftermarket, there's probably nothing you can't get for them. Ever see how fast a Duke is in a well built mini modified?
