Most of us are spending more time than usual at home right now- what if we made use of that time to begin constructing the pieces of what could, in typical PLB fashion, come together in October and be assembled Voltron-like to create the ultimate $2k challenge parking lot build?
What have you guys got? Who has an engine? Who has a chassis? Who has enough tubing to try to build a cage for a car that you won't even see for another 7 months?
I'll start- I have a 13B that makes almost no compression. I also have several Ford 7.5" IRS rear diffs, a big Holset turbo, a whole lot of Merkur parts, and enough pieces to put together a 2.3T Lima that should make roughly 10psi of oil pressure and 2-3x as much boost. Also a large stash of random truck shocks and other miscellaneous crap.
I have a Miata 5-speed that should be functional & a 1.6 with a hole in the block.

Interesting idea... Sort like building a ship using "lifts"....
I love it, but don't have much to offer.
Based on this shipping parts between team members doesn't count towards budget.

That's very good to know, I was also thinking we could (assuming we get, at a minimum, somebody with a good chassis and a person or two with a reasonable choice of drivetrain components) send a lot of measurements around and design a few bits for the forum's various machinists and fabricators to make. I'd volunteer to try and collect all of that info and design the parts.

I did an experiment using all the things supposed to melt carbon, I have been looking for a rotary to try this on, Mopar Combustion Chamber Cleaner literally melts carbon.I wonder if spraying it into a low compression rotary, letting it sit for 30 to 45 minute and then blowing it out would free up the stuck seals. Run it and repeat maybe.
Obviously if the seals are worn out it won't work but many times I think they are just stuck because of carbon build up. My first choice for a Challenge build was a RX-8 to try this on, then swap a turbo four banger if it didn't work.
Can you mount and run that 13B?
In reply to Bent-Valve :
This one, unfortunately, is most certainly worn rather than stuck- it inhaled a mixture of dirt and sand at wide open throttle for a couple hundred miles. I know because I was driving
The question is what don't you want? Because i can legit build like 5 cars out of E36 M3 i have laying around. You can have the 2000 q45 as a base if you want provided i keep the wheels and the lsd r200 when it's done and someone else tows it and takes it away afterwards. Fix some coils so it runs right and ghettocet it?
after 2 PLB's i'm bowing out of assembly but can help with parts

I like this idea. Living in the PNW this is about the only way I can get involved in the challenge.
I'm in with custom pieces made from scrap when needed. Anything that will fit in a flat rate box.
In reply to ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ :
I've got the engine, chassis and Body already..... You all are more than welcome to help.
In reply to Indy-Guy :
That certainly has potential.
I can provide as much stainless steel sheet metal as I can get my hands on. My shop throws away appliances panels DAILY. Some of which are already bare metal
I'll offer up my $300 broken Ford Escort, if anyone wants to haul it to their place to work on it...

I have a 1.6 that just might run and a vlsd from same car (the vlsd is good).
I love this idea.
In reply to ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ :
I think we should all just mail you random parts and see what you come up with.
Edit: Don't know how you will handle multiple cars showing up. Good luck
Never been apart of the challenge before but I'll send a box of random inter cooler piping I found on the curb

I looked at that buts its like 1100 miles one way. You were egging me on to rally cross something, well, back at ya! LOL
As far as the random parts, I do have some random parts and one in particular I thought about giving to this build. (not the free ZX2 I just got)

It has the potential to be a wicked handful to drive! In a good way...

This......actually has the makings of a web series. We spin the wheel of misfortune to land a chassis that's been offered up. I see an escort, an Infiniti (and God only knows what else Pat is hiding he won't tell us about) and I'm sure others will chime in. Spin the wheel, make a deal. Everyone else donates whatever....things they have to make it work. Sheet metal, springs, turbos, etc. Obviously we would have to put some sort of limit as to what is sent so op isn't saddled with a windowed Vulcan as an example. Car would be almost 100% free - because if I still understand the rules correctly, if it's offered to everyone , free is free. You could almost out two chassis out there and make em race each other. I know there's enough......things out there, and if the new years game is an indication- grm loves the chance to jam anything they can in a flat rate box. I'm convinced someone will manage to send an entire ls block sooner or later.
I would also like to offer up my NC Miata diff if it doesn't sell by summer.
