I had a 991 S.  Best thing I did was get the DSC V3 suspension controller.  The suspension settings in normal mode were way to harsh IMHO.  The DSC V3 allows the suspension controllers to use more of their adjustability so that normal was very nice on the street while still allowing much firmer settings for the track.  Transformed the car from something I didn't enjoy driving to something I loved.

My neighbor has a 987.1 with the Sport Exhaust and it's LOUD and drones hard.

FWIW that's a completely different engine. Not saying that it's not possible, but I wouldn't say that's an indicator that the .2 version is going to be bad. About as useful of a data point, the 981 sport exhaust is awesome, if I had the budget I'd add it to my car.

Such is the way with exhaust noises, so much comes down to individual ears and preferences.  I really wanted to love mine, and did for the first few weeks.  After a while it just wore me out.  For comparison, my current ND Miata has a race exhaust that's basically a resonated straight pipe and I absolutely love it.

Normal service (by my standards) appears to have resumed.

I'm out of town and my wife has been using the 997 as her Jeep is in the shop for not quite yet diagnosed suspension issue.

Apparently it's sitting in the garage playing possum with a suspected dead-ish battery. At least it's sitting in the garage, but given that it did that after regular use, I'm not sure that charging up the battery and hoping for the best is the right way to go about anything but exercise the AAA membership.

Oh well, I'm supposed to be home Saturday morning, although "fix the reliable German vehicle" wasn't on the plan for the weekend.

Not that much to report - after the last post, I replaced the battery with a Costco Interstate (yes, I know) and we made sure to keep it on a trickle charger. Hey, what's another Battery Tender between friends.

I finally got my act together last week and booked it in for an annual service. One of the issues with running car like this where I live is that most of the specialists that look after road cars are in and around DC, and at least a couple of hours drive each way. The company I picked did offer a loaner car after I explained the issue, which was fortunate.

Overall the car got a very clean bill of health, well, after we went through some of the catch up maintenance. Given that we expect to drive it for a long time, I want it maintained by the book and then some, and there was some "not cheap" work that we didn't have records for. Oh well, it's all caught up now for slightly more than the price of a somewhat ratty Miata. Ooof. Oh well, the last modern 911 I owned went into the shop with a slight tick and came out after a complete engine strip down, so this was a bargain .

One item the PO did apparently not spring for was an alignment - I mentioned to the service writer that I wanted the alignment checked as it felt off, and they confirmed that it was off. A new, somewhat sportier-than-factory alignment made a huge difference. Probably need to take it out on some of the WV roads that I just explore by motorcycle.

Ah yes, it was time for the the annual big smoking crater in the wallet from Porsche maintenance. While I really like these things and the 997 got another clean bill of mechanical health, I could do without the regular reminder than I'm paying for maintenance on what was once a six figure car.

Not to mention that I'm looking at another crater in spring as it needs new shocks and of course with it having the electronically adjustable suspension, those aren't exactly found in a cornflakes box either.

Although I shouldn't complain too much, OEM parts availability is great for a car of this age, and the unexpected expense of needing new motor mounts shouldn't be that unexpected on a car that's got 75k miles on it and is 14 years old. Yes, I keep forgetting how old it is.

Plus, between new rear tyres - I had the fronts replaced when we originally picked up the car in Fresno - and the new motor mounts, it's noticeably smoother and more quiet. Can't complain about that.

Motor mounts are stupidly easy to replace.  Just do it yourself.  Same with the suspension, really easy to replace.

It's my experience that most of the stuff on these cars is no worse to replace than any other car. I'm talking about doing the work yourself. If you have a shop do the work, then you really end up paying the Porsche tax.

I'd say it depends upon the 911 and what you're using them for. I've owned water coolers and sir/oil coolers. Very different cars.

Cool car. I saw a Ferrari today in a similar "like butter" color.

It's more of a question of where I would end up in the project queue. As this is a 2.5 season daily, I tend to get the work done by a specialist unless I have the time right away.

We needed this one back quickly due to the delays with getting my wife's LJ back, and the 997 is the only other car that she drives, given that she doesn't do manuals and hates driving the LX470.

I think my C3.2 is a tad easier, but neither of them are that complex. Given enough time (hah) I should be able to do more work on it that I'm doing right now.

Neither is hard to work on, although I love the fact thst you can pull an aircooler engine and trans in under an hour.  The 996 on isn't remotely like that.  The 996 and to a degree the 997 are way better as DDs in the real-world. The real 911s (pre 964) are way more fun as track,  back road cars.

Apparently if you know what you're doing you can pull the engine out of my 996 turbo in 2 ish hours.  At some point I'll find out but I doubt I'll have it out that fast given it'll be the first time I'll have done it
