So I take it this idea passes the GRM feasability test. I'm used to being looked at like I escaped from an institution when I discuss this anywhere else. I shouldve known!
Have you read any of my threads? There is a fine line between feasibility and insanity. Most of the folks here will support your insanity, but there is a small percentage who frown on even the most feasible ideas.
In short, do what you want.
You have a frame, you have a V8, its like a wimpy truck. Beef it up and have fun.
Games Garner is your Obi-Wan. He had an Olds. You have a Lincoln.

I wouldn't take silence as acceptance...I think most of us don't know what a "cup" is as it relates to lifting a taxicab.
If you don't see acceptance in the above posts, you may need to say an opthamologist
Plus, I didn't make up the term "cups". It's apparently the most popular mod with these cars. I simply Googled it.
Yeah...my post was not recieved/interpreted as intended.
I mean...nobody posted anything about "cups" because I think some of the people reading the thread don't know what it means and don't want to go research it. That doesn't mean "we" think it's a good idea to use them.
For the record, I never assumed you made that term up...and I assume those who did are not performance modification oriented folks...
I've had a lot of fun in old LTDs and Gran Marquiseses (albiet of the old square body style variety) on a dirt rally course. They're tough. I've had them airborne, I've hit trees, put them in the ditch, etc.
They're fun for dedicated racing...but I wouldn't want to go drive (hoon) around off road and plan to drive home (let alone to work the next day) with one.

I certainly meant no disrespect and I don't mean any now but... This is FAR from insane. In fact, compared to most of the project threads, this would be considered mild. I don't believe that a 3" ($120) lift plus a set of mud tires amounts to my "insanity" at all.
I could understand your sentiment if I was looking to swap the body onto an Expedition frame but my idea is more like a weekend project. Bumpers and tire carrier would be phase two I guess.
As a matter of fact...this thread has me daydreaming about getting my '89 Gran Marquis going again (it's a back 40 crasher/racer) and actually doing some sort of "prep" to it...

It almost lost its battery terminal last race.
I'm with Clem on dedicating an off road vehicle. Jeep drivers often plan to drive home and don't. (stuck in the mud thread)
If you want a daily driver that has a higher probability of needing a tow home, more power to you, but if you have a fleet like me, Clem and many others here, more power to you.
I completely agree. I guess my idea of hooning is different than others. I don't see jumps and bouncing off trees in my future. Im more the type to pick my way through mild trails and obstacles and the occasional dirt road drift.
Along with this, I'm a very firm believer in driving to the trail and driving home. It's a way to show how good a driver one is (Im inclined to drive with my head and not the rev-limiter). I have always driven my vehicles home even after repairing a torn frame and broken steering box and removing and straigtening a bent tie-rod. We've been on some trails from local stuff to more hardcore trails up near the Mohawk Trail and drove the two hours home. It's not BETTER than a trailer, it's just my way. I always enjoyed the drive to Dunkin Donuts after a long, hard day of trailriding all in the same vehicle while friends had to load thier broken Jeeps on trailers. (ever try to take a full-size pickup with a Jeep on a trailer through a drivethru?)
Anyway, I appreciate your input(s) and agree with all of it. Thank you!
