Probably a stupid question, but here it goes.

Would an SUV, like a Ford Explorer, work in your use case? I ask because, and this is an assumption, trucks are probably more expensive than SUVs.

Is there anything you can do to mitigate turbo failure? At 329K miles, I bought a new turbo assembly for my TDI after I noticed oil in the outlet pipe during the 300K timing belt change. An indication the turbo seals were on their way out and total failure was imminent.   I generally accept that something spinning at really high RPM at high heat for hours on end is going to be a wear item.

Is the ecoboost intercooled?  I'm pretty surprised you'd get enough shrapnel through an intercooler in big enough chunks to take out a rod.

Speculation, but could it have been oil system failure (broken pump gear?) that took out both the turbo and the rod?

Hmm... maybe, but it kinda doesn't matter to me right now. I need a solution to my transportation problem, not an understanding of the cause.

There was no warning at all. Oil pressure was good until it suddenly dropped to zero. Temp was good. No CELs.

I'd do platinum rebuilt title 5.0. Engine replacement cost alone.  I think I'd even go 5.0 if I bought f150 new just for that reason.

Yes, a decade makes a big difference. It also makes a difference that that truck is in Nebraska, and the other ones I mentioned I could have today or tomorrow.

Under $400 on Delta will have you in Nebraska tomorrow afternoon and home in time for any weekend sportsball.

Just looked at the 2011 5.0L Platinum.

I had never driven a 5.0. I was impressed.

The truck is not perfect.  I can see some of the probable reasons for the rebuilt title, but I had to look for them.

It's a long bed, which means my cap won't fit on it. Shame. That's $4K. It's also lifted riding on oversized wheels, which means I'd have to undo a few things. But that's not that hard.

Still a good buy for a truck that is ready to work. The low mileage is very tempting.

Hmm... now another one is on my radar.

Clean truck. 2014 EB XLT. It's got high mileage (220K). Kinda hate that high mileage in an EB. But the price tag is $9900, and it's available locally.

...and a short bed, so my cap will fit.

Lots of things can be covered with some cash-miles cannot.

First choice V8 with rebuilt title

Second choice fix your EB

Long Third is buying a high mileage EB for any money. You have no firsthand knowledge of how well it was taken care of and if it is headed for failure. At least with the V8 option, replacement cost is reasonable

Find one.

Then find someone to install it.

It doesn't save much money, and leaves me with several months of down time. That doesn't work.

Third option...

Perfect condition 2013 F150 Platinum  Ecoboost.  Identical to my old truck (including color).  135K.    CarMax is selling it. $28,000 out the door.

I have a slightly lower model 2013 Ecoboost, same mileage, and they're offering $9K as a trade-in. That's a heck of a markup! My point is that it should be possible to find one somewhere in the middle.

What about a 1999-2006 Silverado.  Not a forever truck.  But cheap and reliable.  Everyone can fix them for peanuts.

I would pass on the 07-08 Silverado. Mine was a maintenance hog. 2 transmissions,  BCU, radiator, alternator, seat repairs, and wheel bearings. My business partner's 07 Tahoe was just as bad. Lots of electrical issues. Gallons of burned oil. It took them a few years to work the kinks out of 07 the redesign.

On the other hand, I have a 07 GMC Classic that is pre redesign that has been flawless. I also have friends that have a 10 Tahoe that has been pretty good as well.

My local mechanic, who is gm wizard, says best bet is 1999-2006 (anything pre redesign) or 2015 or newer.  He says the ones in the middle are hit or miss.

I do like my 2016 Silverado work truck trim. 5.3 and a six speed.  The lifter thing is real, mine recently failed at 180k-ish.  Engine looked to be in great shape otherwise.  I did notice it had a nice freshly painted trans when I bought it at about 150k.  Apparently you want to stay away from the 8 speeds.

Nice place to be and comfortable to drive even in the base trim.

Apparently the 6.0 liter 2500s from this generation did not have the AFM so the lifter problems arent there.

Another GM data point for you Paul.  My 2017 Yukon Denali has been fantastic for the 90k I've added to it.

If you want low cost of maintenance, reliability, and low repair costs avoid the EB. I've said I'm not a fan on here multiple times and I get my head bitten off about how reliable they are, and they aren't any more complex than any other motor, and repairs aren't any more expensive.

I'd take the coyote over the EB, but I'm not a huge fan of it either.

I prefer GMs, specifically non DOD LS GMs

bulletproof motor. Mostly serviced at the dealer. Good mileage. These are easily 250+++ trucks.

this one is the long bed. Don't be deterred by those rear doors- I've ridden in the back of one of these quite a bit and they are great trucks. My sequoia has the same drivetrain and while the gas mileage sucks (doesn't matter for you) it's a great motor. I'd probably go factory wheels and high sidewall tires because I like comfort- and as long as they made these wheels should be very easy to find and affordable.

also- timing chain.
