a j-mod is TOTALLY worth it.
I was apprehensive that it would get old. I even contemplated not making the holes as big as the instructions indicate.
No such problem.
It doesn't make your transmission shift harder as much as it makes it shift faster. yes it's harder too, but only if you're running full throttle.
If cars responded to caffeine, it kinda feels like someone fed it an espresso.
Took me inside of two hours to do, plus the cost of a tranny filter, 10 quarts of fluid, and two gaskets.
Wait, wait, wait...'splain me the "j-mod" I've got a 97 Exploder 5L w/ a 4r70w that we run as a tow vehicle, and I'd love a little less gear lag.
mmmmkay. someone who allegedly was involved in the development of said transmission, came up with a simple process for modifying it.
Between the valve body and the transmission there is a separator plate that regulates fluid flow. You take that out and drill some of the holes bigger than they came. The result is basically shifts take a fraction of the time they used to. It's like a shift kit, but nearly free.
google j-mod. It's a fairly common thing to do.
Hmmmm....
My P71 is due for a filter change soon anyways... I'm going to have to do this...

dude, you haven't already done this?!
I got my fluid changed at one of those places that pulls the lines off and circulates all the atf first. My pan had not been off already. There was still the little yellow plunger in there.
I heard about it vaguely when I changed the filter and fluid when I first got the car a year and a half ago, but I didn't investigate. I thought the trans tuning I had done with the Superchips was as good as it was going to get.
I did a little back-to-back drag test with the Superchips and the trans adjustments by themselves are worth 3 tenths. One of these days I'll do a stock tune vs 87 tune vs 91 tune.
It's been my impression that you want both actual trans tuning at the software level, and this sort of mechanical improvement. Mainly because it will require less line pressure to achieve the same firm/quick shifting you can get with your handheld. But obviously the J-mod doesn't change when the transmission shifts
I did the minor J-Mod last year to my 96 f150 tow rig.
Yes its the best. I also did a temp sensor in the pan and royal purples MAX ATF and a 4 core rad and a Aux filter before the factory cooler. Even towing 4ton of compressed wood pellets up the hill sides i never got over 160deg in the pan.
The minor J-mod real helped my 1-2 overlap time its firm but not harsh. 2-3 is as well i didn't touch the 3-4 as I normaly lock out the OD when hauling untill i'm up to speed.

You cannot safely JMOD a truck valvebody. If that is the route you choose get a car valvebody or seperator plate.
Alan
Pure mis-information even Jerry say it's fine in a truck. Just use the mild drill sizes.
