I've twice bought second cars of ones I already had (Triumph GT6 and e30), and began restorations of both. Never finished either, kind of just thought "why am I doing this, why would I want to drive a second one of something I already have, that seems boring" and ended up selling both.

My "rule" of sorts is I have cars for a particular reason, and don't have another car for that same reason.

GTI = my commuter

Sequoia = my tow rig

Raider = my offroad/camping rig

e30 = rally car

Porsche = road trip car, cruising, etc.

Though I drive all of them here and there, they mostly just do what their "role" is. Having a second one just seems pointless to me.

It wasn't really intentional. I found the twin with a front end hit and bought it as a parts car for my RallyCross car. After taking a closer look, I realized that the second car was fixable and would make a nice daily beater.

I owned two Miatas at the same time, but I kind of figured that everybody who touches a Miata at some point in their life will own more than one at a time. But that was just so I could grab the hard top from one and swap it with the soft top from the car I was racing. Very brief. My last Miata was exactly the same car from the movie, Cars (the twins--right down to the color and wheels). The only case where I think I'd actually want to own two of the same car would be if they were both that exact car again. I wouldn't even drive them--I'd just leave them in the garage in some silly pose or something.

I once owned a real nice e36 m3.   it was too nice for me.   I sold it in favor of a rough 328i auto with blown motor and swapped in an LS1/T56.  I find it easier to enjoy a car that is not cosmetically perfect.

This!!

I purchased a really low millage 996. It was virtually a new car with under 20k miles.  It was fun at first but that wore off as the car did not have a scratch.  I did not want to drive it for feer of a stone chip.  Did not want to show it for feer of people damaging it.    Sold it on to a guy that was going to add it to his collection. It will never see daylight and most likely be driven once a year to get inspection.

In reply to dean1484 :

Drive it behind a gravel truck for a few miles, then leave it in a community college parking lot for a few days in a row. After that, there is nothing left to worry about.

That is how to take a 53k 996 and make it in to a 25k 996. I just rather start with the 25k one.
