So, I'm sick of spooning my own tires on my motorcycle, on the floor, with various hunks of wood and motion pro spoons. My very pretty powder coated wheels are all scratched up from slipping off my milk jug material I use to protect them.
I have a nice plan to use up some old cage tubing to make a clamping table and so on... but what I need is a type of plastic round stock to make rim clamps from on the lathe. McMaster has machinable plastic rod in many types - and price points and I am unsure which is the cheapest that meets my requirements.
- strong enough to clamp a 17" alloy wheel without deforming
- machinable enough that I can make a groove to fit the rim
- cheap enough that I can buy a foot of 3" diameter for beer money
- slippery enough not to scratch powder coating or paint but not so slippery that it has to be tightened to a gazillion torques to clamp the rim.
So... Delrin? Acetal? HDPE? Old skateboard wheels? What do I need!? I feel like the black stuff that "solid" suspension bushings are made from is perfect but I don't know it's trade name. Nylon I've used to make suspension bits in the past is also nice but way expensive ($83/6" @ 3" diam)
I could just go buy the HF tire machine but there is no weekend project in that.
