Hmm, I wasn't even thinking about the LS and SC400...
The downside of the Lexus is the lack of limited slip rear differential and no easily swapped in option.
Of that group, the most plentiful and overlooked is the Lincoln Mark VIII. Came factory with airbag shocks that are known to fail but there is a popular swap to regular coil springs. Try to find one that has already swapped out the air ride for coil.
You can buy these cars cheap any day on any CL.
I keep forgetting the roman numerals on the Lincoln. It has the 4.6 and IRS fairly close to the Cobra Mustang IRS, right?

Yep, it's got the 4.6 teksid aluminum block, 32 valve but different intake and I think cams than the na cobras.
On the Lexus though, they are terribly slow, the sc/gs00 is the one you want so you can put a turbo on. That said a mk8 Lincoln would be the better/cheaper choice.

If searching CL, just put in the phrase "Lincoln Mark" then sort through. Some people will use 8, others VIII.
Miata. It won't need much maintanance, cheap consumables, no big parts swaps to make it understand how to get around a corner.
All you'll to get started in auto X, is tires and a big front sway bar. Easy.
In reply to Chadeux: The b body can take an LS swap. With a police package they aren't bad but they are a bit worn out now. One of the last crown vics with a police package is not bad. If you can find a used detective special Caprice with a 6.0 that car will run. The G8 is still holding value so it they are not cheap for the milage. They are great cars though.
