For years, I've had a Snap-On Impact Driver similar to this one:

http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&tool=all&item_ID=1711&group_ID=223&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog

I've never really thought about what kind of hammer I should be using until recently, when it began to show some wear.

What should I be using? Ball Peen? Mallet? Something else?

I use a 3 pound sledge. Lots of inertia makes great use of the impact driver.

Depends on how stuck it is. I have an impact drive I bought at Pep Boys in 1978. Still works just fine. I use the ball peen hammer on little things like small screws up to the 3 lb maul ("Thor") on bigger ones or the 4 lb maul ("Son of Thor") if it really looks stuck.

Really, really handy for allen head 1/4x20 bolts into aluminum after a couple years. One tap and they'll come right out without stripping.

Email snap-on and ask them?

Clean the head of the screw really well so the bit will bottom in the cross, hex, whatever, hold that puppy steady and square, 'bias' it a bit towards the 'remove' direction, smack impact driver with a claw hammer. Never had to use anything bigger.

Speaking of which, I have a stuck lock screw with a stripped allen head in a GC coilover. Anyone remember those reverse grabbing bits you put in the drill? They used to advertise them on TV. Does any brick and mortar store carry those?

HAHA as a carpenter by trade. Im gonna tell you

"its the motion of the ocean" "not the size of the ship"

I can make the impact hammer work VERY well with a correct blow from a 12 oz hammer. If I used a mall it would be way over kill ;)

Uhhh....The big one?

I use what ever is closest with mine. Sometimes not even a hammer.

Are you referring to an Easy Out? That'll work almost as well.

For the record, the Ground Control allen head screws are not metric.

I've been part of an effort to remove allen screws from a GC coilover before with zero luck.

whatever you do, do not cut the bolt where it goes through the split in the collar.

that said, those allen screws seem to be at least slightly hardened, we got zero purchase with the EZ-out.

I have been told that it is OK to run without the bolt, but I'm not sure that I buy that...

I never tighten that bolt on my GCs. No problems yet with self adjusting perches.

BFH. Wear safety glasses, both surfaces are hardened and chips will fly.

I think Sears has what you need.

BTW - They are not called Allen Screws. They are called Socket Head Cap Screws.

I know that BFH is the easy answer, I just didn't know if that would be the best option for the tool.

...and I'm guessing that Snap-On wouldn't be responding to e-mail at 5:51 pm. It's now 8 am and I have 15 GRM replies!

Not an Easy Out (massively misnamed object, should be called "Easy to break hardened steel device in your project now causing a total stoppage while you try to locate a sonic disintigrator"). The gizmo I'm thinking of is a bit set that grabs and digs into the screw.

I'll try Sears. If that doesn't work, I think I'll drill the head off. I was anticipating replacing the ring from GC, but if people run them without tightening, WFT, I'll give it a try.

Now that Sturgis is over, I need to get caught up on my other maintenance projects.

sears has a few different extracotrs- the "power" ones and the ones for hand use. Can you drill it and tap it? that might be the easiest way.

At any rate, how do those impact drivers work? I've seen them but never used one. They twist when you hit them??
