So... my buddy who swapped me cars got into a fender bender with a lady and the insurance company is thinking about writing off his Wagon. He has an idea of getting a
E21 on Craigslist he found and buying a
M30 Swap. We have all the necessary tools and welders to complete the task, but do you think this is a headache waiting to happen?

Why does it have to be either incredible OR stupid?
I think it would be incredibly stupid, so go for it!
very true. Bring on the beer!

Of course it is - that doesn't seem to be much of a deterrent for this crowd though. Word is great for acceleration - not so good for corners.
^Myth. M30 is on par with M5x/S5x swaps, but with a big fat does of bottom end grunt.
I say go for it!
E30's are God's Chariot. Add a motor swap and well, you get the idea.

Someone asking if they should buy any car/related item on this board is like a crack addict asking a crack dealer if they should buy more crack...
That being said, I wholy endorse any idea of buying more crack, err I mean cars...
e21s came with m20s in europe, the m30 is only about 60 pounds heavier, gearbox is likely a bit heavier too, but not tremendously.
i'd definitely relocate the battery to the trunk though.
i say go for it.
damn paul you move fast! im down for the swap but have to wait on the insurance
why go for the heavery M30? unless you can get it cheap, I would go for the smaller, but lighter m50
Just to buck the trend: No, bad idea.
(But I'm really saying: yes, do it!)

cant find any at a decent price. i know they are out there for cheap, but i cant find any. The only one i could find is $800 just for the motor...

M30 is popular for it's cheapness compared to 24v swaps.
I can't imagine doing the work to swap anything in other than an OBD-I S52.

x2...
I'll call Richie and have him ready to fill in your calf tat
Somethin like this?
Welder+Beer+Insurance Money = Awesomeness
I'm going to add my +1 to the M50/S50/S52 swap. The bix six is an awesome motor but its not just heavier - its longer too so unless you cut the firewall it sits more than half its weight out in front of the axle.
I picked up a 2.5L M50 last year for a case of Blue Moon with a blown head gasket, in need of a harness injectors, intake, ECU, TB and headers. I sourced the rest from junkyards for a total of about $350. Look harder ;)

what trans did you use with?
ive driven a number of s50/s52 e30 cars and they are pretty damn nice. if you can budget it i do agree.
i've even considered swapping my s14 out for an s52 variant, though im not sure i'd do it for anything less than an aluminum 2.8L block, s50 crank, 2.9L build...
I've seen a number of M30 swaps into e30s, but I'd think the engine compartment of a e21 would be pretty tight.
incredibly stupid, and thus must be done.
