OK, I was exagerating a bit, but this link says some dude named Dale Jr is the top paid Nascar driver at $23.5m USD. LCH is reported to have signed a $140m multi year deal with Merc. That's meant to be a base salary of $32m a year with bonuses for performance that can take it up to $45m per year. On top of that he's supposed to have $10's of millions per year in personal sponorship. I think we can safely say he earns double the top NASCAR earners and probably more than the indy car field.

Fine, but you said "several times". I think your F1 snobbery got the better of you.
In any case, none of these guys are going to go starving any time soon.
I believe that between salaries and endorsements both Schumi and Alonso have hit near the 100m mark in one year. Now, I have no idea how much of that was lost to taxes, attorneys, support staff, etc.

Other than being a US citizen where you are stuck paying income tax no matter where you live, for the rest of the developed world once you spend certain % of you time out of the country (50%) you pay no tax. That's why all the mega rich live in Monaco, cayman isle, Isle of Mann or other tax haven.
