IndyCar driver Simona de Silvestro moving to Formula One with Sauber
I hope she does well, not because I think there should be a token woman in the sport for artificial "fairness". But because I believe in people succeding based on talent, and people like Stirling Moss that believe women "don't have the mental skills" to race in F1 should be proven wrong in the most embarassing way. But if she isn't fast enough then it should be someone else's chance at a seat.
That's a very misleading headline. Simona is now an "affiliated driver" which is a step below test driver. She's really part of Sauber's development squad which is a lower-budget version of RedBull's similar efforts.
I'm a fan of hers because she has demonstrated a lot of skill and heart while competing in less-then-stellar equipment. With some performance, luck and sponsor dollars she might actually make it.
Good for her, but not so good for Indycar. For a series that has some of the best racing out there, they can't seem to get it right with promotion. She was good for the media attention, but she was also a good driver that deserved a better ride.
I don't agree with her move, but I wish her well. She is moving to a team that is not a top team and her results may not show her talent or effort. Walking away from indycar, where even in a coyne seat she could get a win, podium, and maybe even be in the top 3 in the championship. I see her career in sports car racing in a few years making much less then in indycar.
Now that she has decided this career she should be racing at the tracks in Europe in either DTM, GP2, or FR 3.5.
