I usually cruise about 5mph over the speed limit in all my cars, but have no doubt the Saab would sit happily at 100+ all day if I asked it to.

I would have no hesitation running the 335i at 100+ for a road trip, my wallet wouldn't like that though. It's still very composed and comfortable at 120+ so I am guessing 100 wouldn't be too bad. Even with that said, I still like to lock in between 70-75 when I'm cruising.

When I had my WRX I wouldn't hesitate cruising above 90. The only reason I didn't is it was insanely loud. Even at 70 there was a drone that would just annoy you. Fuel was the other issue. At 70 I would average about 22 mpg, but at 80 I would be averaging 16 mpg. Granted I had a tune and turbo back on, so that may have been the reason for the above. in stock form I'm sure it would eat up miles at high speed with no problem.

We usually take the M Coupe on trips, and it will happily cruise at 140+. If only such a fantasy world like the OP described existed where I could use it.

I ran my 79 Malibu( - the factory chin spoiler which cause float at 80mph) from Indy to Chicago at 125 avg. used 1/2 tank of fuel. 327 at 3200 rpm 2:20 gear in the rear. Only took 1 hr 45 min to reach n side. It was a Sunday night. I slowed to 80 on the skyway. And my radar detector went off full blast once at peak speed from a cop on the over pass. Covering 2 miles a minut plus I don't think he tried. That was 18 yrs ago.

I used to commute I-95 between a small town south of Philly and a small town north of Baltimore, so most days it was pretty unoccupied. On nights that I pulled overtime I would run 10 or 15 miles at 100+ in my 5-year-old Neon ACR sedan. It was turning some revs at that speed, but felt fine. It was a '95 with no speed limiter and if I had a couple miles of clear road to get there, it would drag out at about 135 (calculated from the revs). On a well-maintained superhighway it felt fine cruising at that speed.

Back in the day, my '46 Plymouth had a hand throttle. Crossing Oklahoma at night . Pulled the throttle out. 85 mph. wha=hoo.

Today with my Fiesta, I generally cruise on the interstate at an indicated 75. Just comfortable. I have driven it at higher speeds and feels steady as a rock.

If I can get gas I'd do top speed in my 'rolla - should be somewhere between 210-240kph with the new engine.

On the Samurai, whatever the speed is of the first draftable person I run across or a painful 80kph because MPG falls off a cliff above that

I drive on I-55 all the time (live in Bloomington, but go back "home" to Chicagoland at least once a month). Yeah, it would be really easy to just do 100.

As it is, I typically set cruise at about 73mph. Still passing people, still getting passed.

OK, so this is one spot where my DD definitely doesn't shine.

My '13 Leaf will do 90mph in total comfort, but it'll suck the battery dry in a hurry. On the rare times I need to take it on the highway, I stay in the right lane and do 60-65.

I live up north running too quick either gets you a nasty ticket or a broadside with a moose. I would likely be happy doing 85 mph, but that would cost you about a $500-$600 ticket up here.

Current Fleet:

02 WRX - I cruise at 120 km/h (75 mph) normally, I have never really stretched its legs on tarmac. I save my hooning with it for dirt roads. I have had it at 110 km/h (70 mph) on dirt. Above 120 km/h fuel mileage really takes a dump.

2012 Ford Explorer - feels like it has plenty left above 75 mph. But fuel becomes a consideration too.

Past vehicles:

91 Chev PU - 454/4 spd manual - pinned the speedo and flattened the hood guard right down on to the hood. Speed who knows, but faster than my buddy's Toyota.

Past vehicle:

00 E39 M5 - This car was a highway animal. It was basically built for the autobahn, so I felt that the engine was never used up to its full potential. It was also too fat to autox or track, but I did nearly 2 seasons of autox in it. I could easily do a 90 MPH cruise, but fuel mileage would take big a hit. I usually kept it around 70 MPH so I would get 20+ mpg.

Current:

03 X5 3.0i - Another good highway cruiser. I cruise at 80 mph all day, but will keep it at 70 mph for the gas mileage. I've gotten 24 mpg once by keeping it at 70 mph, and the giant ~24 gal tank offers amazing trip range. I'll see 400 miles on the trip odometer past with 1/4 tank of fuel left!

2 yrs ago I was commuting about 120 miles per day through rural southern Utah. I would get off work at 1:00 am and would frequently average 100mph on the way home in my E34 540i-6 on the deserted freeway. The car would return an honest 30mpg at 75, mpg lowered to ~15 on high speed runs!

It was the perfect "autobahn car". Comfy and composed at 140+. Sadly I never did have a chance to top it out before I sold it. I never had the guts to take it past 150.

My Subaru OBS feels strung out over 90.

'95 F150 4X4 I usually keep at 75, 5 under the speed limit.

07 Fit... this was a decent high way cruise up until about 75 mph. Anything over that and it was very buzzy. 65-70 mph was the sweet cruising spot with the cruise control on.

10 Mz5.. Haven't taken it on too many highway cruises but the brief cruising I have done with it, it chugs right along and seems like it would be a good mile muncher. Also, it is more stable than the Fit at higher speeds.

The scariest highway cruiser I was ever in was a 93ish Grand Cherokee owned by a friend in high school. It would violently shake at 90 mph.

If my Savanna had cruise, I could set it for 90 and feel comfortable.

The Durango, probably 80

The Cherokee, hmm, I'll have to think about that one.

Ive gone 90 something in a YJ Wrangler and that is defintiely not something i would want to do very often. It didnt shake (since it didnt have, you know, MAJOR ISSUES which is what causes things to shake violently) but it was so loud it was unnerving. haha

Damn wildly prolific ever expanding population of deer are what scare me. Several skirmishes a year these days out here in forested west of the Cascades Oregon country. Given deer, I'd stick to 80 on 4 lane roads and 70 on two.. Out in the great wide open of basin range, low deserts, or the plains I think I'd go for 90.. Awww screw it! 100.

When I was young and dumb, I had on more than one occasion set the cruise on my SAAB 9000 at a speed about double the posted limit on the PA turnpike. I stuck to stretches that I knew were lightly patrolled and had few good speed trap spots, and didn't blast through traffic. The car was completely composed and comfortable at that speed.

I don't do that kind of stuff anymore.

I live in the same part of the state, and I do the same speed with the same passing and being passed.I would maybe go a little faster but at that speed my miata is just under 4k.Spin it any faster and the mileage drops quite a bit.Around 4k is where I think miatas go into open loop or something

My Chevy Volt is pretty comfortable cruising at 85. 75ish if on mild hills.

My FD RX7 is pretty comfortable at 100 +- regardless of terrain.

The Mini likes to cruise at 90.
