Damn, that poor fellow never stood a chance.

No, he didn't. That is the worst place for a car to be impacted; the door is essentially a giant hole in the side of the vehicle; the door offers only negligible protection. That would have been tough to survive even with door bars/cage. Trees are solid, immovable objects and nothing like being hit/hitting another vehicle which will at least partially crush and dissipate some of the energy. The car had to take it all in this case, and there simply isn't structure there to handle it.

I noticed also that this occurred at 5:15pm, late in the day. I've only done Hyperdrives during the lunch break. I wonder is fatigue may have contributed as well?

I feel really bad for the driver in this case. This will haunt him for the rest of his days.

Note to self: don't instruct on Jefferson.

I have run on Jefferson with PHA as a "hillclimb". It definitely doesn't have the runoff/lack of obstacles of a normal track. I think it is mainly used for government driver training.

This is a truly sad event. Thoughts and prayers to the instructor's family and friends, and the driver. I'm sure this is something that will stay with him forever.

I also heard that the rally stage there was very rough, rockey and tight and everyone broke stuff but the accident on the track came as a shock to me.

I am on page 14 of the thread, it is pretty amusing.

This is so sad, I can't accept that in 2014 we should be driving around 'professional' circuits which have exposed trees. It appears here to me that the price of a barrier cost someone his life - that cannot be right.
