No, he didn't. That is the worst place for a car to be impacted; the door is essentially a giant hole in the side of the vehicle; the door offers only negligible protection. That would have been tough to survive even with door bars/cage. Trees are solid, immovable objects and nothing like being hit/hitting another vehicle which will at least partially crush and dissipate some of the energy. The car had to take it all in this case, and there simply isn't structure there to handle it.
I noticed also that this occurred at 5:15pm, late in the day. I've only done Hyperdrives during the lunch break. I wonder is fatigue may have contributed as well?
I feel really bad for the driver in this case. This will haunt him for the rest of his days.
