We found the answer last year and bought a pristine 2001 Miater SE. Had the race car, trailer and TR8 insured through Hagerty. So we sold the 8 and picked up the Miata and Hagerty doesn't insure Miata's. Tried the "its just a casual toy like the TR8 was" but no go even with the race car and trailer still on the policy. We have it on our current daily driver insurance but I really like the Hagerty way. I guess there are just too many of the darn things to be considered a collector car. Anybody have their Miata insured through one of the other hobby type companies?

I'm having the same issue. Mine is a 94. I've talked to various insurers in the "hobby/collector" market and been rejected by all of them. Oddly, its for different reasons. Some won't insure me because the car isn't worth enough, some because they don't do Miatas as a rule and some because I occasionally drive the car to work. On the flip side, my "regular" insurance charges me like its a daily driver, when in fact its a third car in a two driver home.
You need an enthusiast agent. My wife can't write in either of those states, but pm me and she can get you with someone that can. She writes a bunch of Miatas as specialty cars with a company similar to Hagerty.

I had no problem insuring my '90 with Aviva, which belongs to Haggerty. Full coverage, $8500 valuation $114/ year. No garage requirement either.
