I need to weld a custom brake bracket on - if its steel its no problem. If its cast iron then... I need a pro or a different caliper configuration.

If it is cast iron I can talk to my pops, he is a metallurgist and one of my uncles is a welder so I might be able to point you in the direction of some rod and how to weld it.

A cast iron hub can be used to make tasty corn bread.
Steel? Notsomuch.

You bastard! This cornbread is awful!
You can weld cast. You should pre heat(from experience) and use a high nickel rod then let it slowly cool. The internet can be your friend http://www.lincolnelectric.com/knowledge/articles/content/castironpreheat.asp.
Well, they are cast... cast out of what is where my problem comes in. My grand plan is to drag one down to the local welding shop and say "Can you guys weld this bracket on here for me?"

Those directions will weld cast iron or steel. IIRC, Nickel rod is the good old fashioned do all.

The nut of the issue is that if it was steel then I could use a mig here and do it... if its cast, I don't have a stick welder and so I need to send it out anyway. So, since I cant really tell what its made out of and brake brackets probably arent the place to guess about whether its got good penetration... I'll just go to the local pros and let them do it.
