I have a Microsoft Word Document of everything i have done/plan to do to my car. Do you guys have a list or curiously organized method of completing your project cars? Or do you just kind of wing it?

I have a spreadsheet with everything I've bought, where I got it, the manufacturer of the part, part number, price, date purchased, and shipping price (if applicable) for everthying I've bought since the day I owned the car.

I keep a seperate list of things yet to be bought (or projects yet to be done) with all of the maint retailers of it, how much it costs at each location (purchase price and shipping -- if applicable) It certainly helps when it comes time to sell.

Oh good, i'm glad i'm not the only one. My GF thinks i go overboard. I also have two books for expenditures. In one book i list the price, phone numbers, websites, reasons, subtotals, tax and everything of every purchase. In the second book i only write the item, an initial for the part (P=Performance, O=Other, M= Maintenance), and the total of each transaction.

I have a notepad that I scribble down my "to do" list for my car

But I don't think that is considered that "organized" compared to spreadsheets...

I don't want to know the numbers, between the various E30s and now the Miata build.............I don't even want to know what I've spent.

And it doesn't really matter as far as resale is concerned either.

I have piece of plywood leaning against a cabinet with scratchings in sharpie on it indicating what's to be done on the GTi. How's that?

By comparison, the owner of the FVee I help has spreadsheets, lists , etc. We joke with him about being OCD. He loves it. He does know where everything is however...

Whatever works right?

I make spreadsheets of to-do's, due dates, subtasks, etc. Helps me stay motivated by giving me small enough tasks that I can feel like I'm making progress.

I have a halfass spreadsheet that needs to be modified AGAIN for my F250 project, but most of my to-do's just float around in my head. If I write them down, I fret over them and continue to look for a "deal" on what I need and waste countless hours when I could be doing something else.

I can be when I'm motivated, but usually am not.

I had a spreadsheet of mods I wanted to do to my Z to prep it for BSP. Now that it's gone, I have a spreadsheet of some possible replacements.

I haven't done the same about my RX-8 (was purchased as winter car, but serving as a single car in the meantime).

Yea, I'm real hi-tech. I plan and check off jobs for a project on a legal pad w/ clip board attached. This and receipts, instructions, printed research/ plans, manuals and small parts go in the 'job box' (an old beer box) so they don't get misplaced and i can drag 'em out to the shop when needed.

I try to sometimes. Then some smartass friends usually end up messing with it.

I walk out to the shop, stand in the middle and make a slow turn. Whatever catches my eye gets the attention for the day. Making lists and deadlines is for work and I really don't want to know how much I spend on things around the shop.

Clearly these guys don't race cars. The first rule of racing is to NOT EVER TOTAL EXPENSES.

Yep I never keep track of that. I try not to think about it.

NOT EVER.

I have a whiteboard in the shop. I also keep receipts for all the cars, and in the case of the Targa car they're stored by year and totalled up annually for tax reasons. It's a bit frightening, enough that I'm not going to be going over to High Plains for track days anymore.

From time to time I open a random box only to find parts I bought but never installed, then forgot I had.

At work I am hyper-organized and efficient. In the garage, not so much.

I have 4 sets of KL fuel rails. One set is bored to accept Nissan injectors and has been modified for dual feed.

I also have 5 sets of KL injectors, and two sets of Millenia injectors.

I kept forgetting i had them. Bought more. Now i'm not using ANY of them.

Done this many times. Anyone need a set of A/C compressor brackets for for a Chevy 250 I6. I found a set this weekend while cleaning the shop.

I keep a spreadsheet for the Valiant. The main page is a list of steps toward the "Objective Valiant". That would be the sport sedan, MPFI, four-wheel disk, bucket seated version of what I drive now. I grey out completed tasks, to give me some sense of progress toward the goals.

Other pages include parts preferences with part numbers and interchanges. That becomes important with older cars not on the Autostoned computers, and even more so with systems swapped in from other cars. For example, my '64 Valiant uses '73-up brake pads and has a 4-pin GM HEI module. I also use spark plugs that don't cross reference to a Slant Six.

Another page is a BOLO list - Be On the Look Out. Parts I want and in what vehicles they might be found.

On the other hand, my garage is a sty.
