One nice thing that Fiat did to/for Chrysler was say, hey guys, you have five different V6 engine families: pushrod 3.8 dating to the 80s, OHC version of that engine, 2.7l, 3.7l, 3.6l... pick ONE and use that in EVERYTHING. And it was good.

The thing behind the 7.3 isn't cost, but it makes power at low speeds. Which is important for HD certification. And because how it's made, it actually ends up getting a LOT better fuel economy than the smaller engine it replaces, since it can get away with almost no enrichment. Fleet owners will really love that feature, as will motorhome drivers.
I'm super interested in how the 7.3 does in motorhomes. I really like the 460 in mine but fuel-efficient it isn't.

If the engine was really designed to run at peak power with no enrichment, that will be a big deal for the larger motorhome owners. Now moving into the RV hobby, I hope that is true.
