As my challenge car nears completion, I began browsing eBay for a good helmet so I can keep my head safe. I know SCCA requires the safety rating to be no more than 10 years (so SA2010 is done at the end of the year) and I keep finding all these SA2005 and SA2000 helmets in new condition for dirt cheap. Is there any use for them?
They still fetch some money on CL or FB. I live in a non-helmet motorcycle state, but many people choose to wear one. There are also stipulations that kids and non-licensed passengers have to wear a helmet, but they don't care what flavor it is.
Plenty of other uses; I have an older fiberglass helmet from the 70s that I wear when I bomb around on my dirt bike, or go ATVing. There are a few of the slower go kart classes that just require "helmet" but nothing fancy. There are tons of motorsport niches that happen outside any sanctioning body, like recreational off-roading, mountain biking, etc that people elect to wear helmets.
If it's got a DOT stamp it can be used as a motorcycle helmet(what will happen to mine after this year) or you can keep it as a fueling helmet if you need one for your particular form of automotive enjoyment.
Speaking of.... HJC has their new i10 helmet on sale at J&P cycles. I trolled CL and FB for a helmet for this year's challenge and I got tired of messaging sellers asking for the Snell rating.
I just got my new M2020 HJC i10 in the mail last week. I think they were $125 or so and I found an online coupon that made it $110.
Order on the larger side. Cheek pads are intense. I normally wear L for a brain bucket and XL for a full helmet. I got an XL and it will wear in nicely, but right now the cheek pads are a wee over-squishing.
Looks like FAST over in Tampa just requires a DOT-rated helmet does their autocrosses. So I guess those cheap old helmets can still get some good use.
I like the separate fueling helmet idea, I’m always chasing around for mine.
If they get old enough they become collectible - I sold a half dozen old motorcycle helmets to a guy a couple weeks ago, including a Bell Star 120 from the 1970s and a couple 'pudding bowls' from the 1960s. I wouldn't recommend using them but they're good shelf art for the garage.
If the helmet is cool I hang it in the garage otherwise it goes in the bin.
Paint projects. Practice some low rider flake and lace. Place on display when done.
Gift it to a slow drag racer.

Your HJC is full-face? I keep looking for an M2020 HJC open-face, but haven't found any anywhere.
could also use it at indoor karting places rather than the helmets they have in stock

I've sold a couple on ebay. Even after certification has expired, they're better than nothing for a guy riding a go-kart around the neighborhood or quad around in the woods or what have you. Dress up like the Stig for Halloween, etc.
ATV, dirtbike, bicycle when its cold, etc.
They may not pass the certification, but they're still pretty damn safe, and infinitely better than nothing.
Full face is nice for snow mobilers. I think DOT is all that is required.
I have two.
I give them to friends and family for use in tornados or bad weather.

My Stilo is like new but is a 2010. Gotta get a new one for next season, which is a shame since I love my Stilo and besides the date on the sticker is in fine shape.
