I've always kind of assumed that with Porsche's, if you couldn't afford it new, you can't afford to maintain it. Are there any exceptions to this rule? Keeping in mind it has to be a daily driver, which will pretty much rule out the 944 (and 924 and 928 and 963) based on age.
Boxster and Cayman twins?
I think that you could affordably DD a 2.7 Boxster for a couple of years.
(blah, blah, blah...IMS, RMS....it's not as common as the internets would have you believe)
You can unless you can't. Let me use my 964 as an example. As long as nothing big goes wrong all you're really on the hook for maintenance wise is valve adjustment every 15k miles. That cost me $700 at a reputable (expensive) shop. Oil changes are a bit pricey but only because the car has about a billion quarts of oil in it. Otherwise, you're only screwed if something major breaks. Mine has basically been a daily driver for the past year. Something like 8k miles. I did get bit with a $1000 blower motor, but that's the sort of thing I'm talking about. CAN you doe it? Yes. Might things go very badly pear shaped? Again, yes. I'd personally have no problem picking up a 10 year old 911 and gambling that I could make it through two glorious years without significant incident. A Camry would carry a lower risk, but think of how much more awesome life would be with a 911 instead.
Age does not really apply to old German stuff(assuming it was well kept after its whole life) the way it does to other cars. There are plenty of old 911s out there with 200+k on them on the original engine or first rebuild. Parts for the 74-89 911 aren't really all that bad either, no $1000 blower motors or jaw dropping plug wires.
Oil changes are expensive, but by having huge filters and huge capacity, that metric buttload of M1 15w50 will only need changed annually if you aren't putting crazy miles on it(I'd guess 10k+ with analysis).

Am i right in assuming that this 1000$ blower motor was a new oem unit from the dealer or euro shop?
Friend of mine uses a '81 928 as a DD in non winter months. He hasn't had much of a problem, but it was in decent mechanical shape when he got it. If/when stuff really starts going bad he'll probably run into trouble paying for it all, though. So far a few years and not a ton of stuff went wrong.

I believe there's currently some sort of supply issue. You can go through Pelican forum posts from two years ago and read complaints about them being $300. A year ago, $600. When I replaced it six months ago, they were between $850 and $950. For the part. And there are two of them. That are side specific. The whole saga is in my build thread. I expect that by the time I need to do it again the aftermarket will have come up with something.
Really though, look at Porches on auto trader, what percent of those are going to have a catastrophic failure within the next 15k miles? Some of them, but not a LOT of them. Most of them will be fine.
I have two. A 924 and a 944 turbo. Admittedly the 924 is a bit closer to a trackday car, but it could be dailyed if you don't mind a little NVH :)
