This 280i on marketplace has been haunting me for a while now. Looks clean, description seems reasonable- what's the catch here? This seems like something BaT/Carsandbids would happily pay more for. Is it reasonable to think I can fix the small stuff, clean it up, and flip it, or are the values of these just not as high as I'd imagine?

Looks like past completed sales on BaT for the 280i range from $6000 to $10,500. I would want it to be quite a bit cheaper than what it's listed for on marketplace to be a viable flip.
As far as I can tell, those cars are only valuable to guys who already own them.
There's been a ratty 280i languishing in a garage around the corner from where I work for at least the past ten years. I'd like to own it, but to my eye, it's a Challenge-friendly car.
TVR guys seem to think they're worth a lot more than that, since they're the only ones who bought them, and therefore, there aren't many around.
In reply to EvanB :
It has been listed forever so I'm picturing a lot of negotiation.
If it was a good flip it would have been gone in a day or 2.

I've been keeping one eye open for years for a rough 280i to make into a Lemons car. This one is too nice sadly. Agree that the market for these is very very limited.
Well now I just want to offer him $3k and see how long I can get away with driving it.
Funnily I've had that car in my list of saved FB car ads for a while now. I don't think it's worth what he's asking, and I also think there is too much scope for expensive mayhem given the list of stuff that's broken.

That looks like a decent price. If you can get him down between 5500 and 6000 just buy it for yourself. If i didn't have so many TR8s I would be seriously tempted. I have had two in the past and they were great fun. To this day they were the only sports cars I have had that my wife truely liked. She will drive my other cars, but she would often just take the TVRs. If you buy it I can offer up dome headlight motors. They are the same as TR7/TR8 and i have a bunch of them.
There was a local guy who autoxed one back in the early-00's. It wasn't fast or competitive then, didn't sound particularly good, and rolled like a ship in a storm. He died a bit over a year ago, idk if Nocones might know anything about the car's current status, but at least the history would be pretty well documented. Iirc he was the president of the TVR club in the US back then too.
I looked at that car. But this is what scared me off:
Needs new speedo cable; headlights no longer pop up; A/C was working but quit; gas gauge gets bouncy when level gets low; the clearcoat on the wood that surrounds the instruments is cracking; the power mirrors and antenna no longer work ... Following a minor accident, the car's front clip was painted. Looked great for a time but blisters developed
It's nothing major, but that's all going to add up to a lot of time and money to sort. I can see you taking this on if you love the platform and don't mind putting in the labor. But I guess I just don't see it being viable as a flip.
