Just keep me in mind. It would be great to save it.
He does realize that for something like $50 and 5 min on line you can get a duplicate title.
Selling it with out a title will require that you have a copy of the registration from the seller. This is proof to the state that the tax's have been paid. They then will verify in there system that the registration matches the title they have on record.
All this is contingent on there being no liens on the car.
So here's the story about the title, or what I think happened. He went online last night and said the title isn't listed on the Mass RMV website. I find it strange as I can see titles for 3 cars I don't even own anymore, but I think that might be due to the fact that they left the state after I sold them(one left the country).
I had suggested to him around April that he should transfer the plate from the RX-7 (yes it was still registered) because it was an old green and white single plate, and it would be a shame to lose it. He had just renewed the registration on the RX-7. He looked into changing the registration from the RX-7 to his 60's vintage Plymouth(I forget the model). Turns out it was more difficult to do than it should've been as the Plymouth was in both his, and his first now deceased wife's names. Apparently over the past month or so he's been dealing with doing that. Allegedly it's all done now, but the registry told him they may revoke the plate at his next inspection as they are trying to eliminate those old plates. His is from around 1977 according to him. I thought those were a single white and red plate, not green, but I could be wrong.
I think once he changed the reg from the RX-7 to the Plymouth they thought he sold the Mazda, and maybe removed the title from the system. I don't think they should've done that, but I think they did. I think he should still be able to get a duplicate, but it seems he can't do it online. Such a pain in the ass. I'm getting pissed that this isn't done yet. How the hell did he lose the title in the first place? He's the original owner.
Chris
So, I officially own the Rx7 as of this afternoon. Paid the man and received the title. Now I need to figure out where, and how to fix this thing. Or possibly part it out.
Chris
I can't believe this thread is two years old...
If Dean doesn't want it and you want to part with the engine and trans (manual right? photobucket pictures are dead) I'll take it off your hands to use in my RX3 wagon. That'd save me a whole lot of effort.
I so want this if Chris gives me the opertunity. I have been with out a rx7 for way to long. I know thes cars inside and out ant would have no problem fixing that one.
I might try to get it up in the air tomorrow and have a good look at how bad it has gotten over the 2+ years it's been sitting. I'm sure time has not done it any favors.
Good luck!
Once you get over the mental hurdle of cutting into the frame, it won't be that bad to fix. Especially if you can get another piece from a junk car to fix it.

I'm rooting for it to be repairable (despite wanting it's heart very badly.) I hate when these cars go into the scrapper.
If you and Dean need the trailer, let me know. Its empty for the moment, but Tom needs it to pick up a Vette, and another buddy needs it to go get a couple of 20' long docks up in Braintree. I'd offer up the lift, but there's just too much stuff to move in order to free it up. Put it on the trailer and bring it to the gas station. He'll put it up in the air for you.
Almost exactly 2 years to the day (1 short) from when I discovered the rot, to becoming the owner. Way too long!!!
Spent the better part of this morning vacuuming, and washing the RX-7. It is in remarkably good condition short of a bunch of door dings, and the rot. Found the right side tail light was protruding out more than it should at the top. Thought maybe it was just not bolted in good correctly. After washing I found it full of water, so removal was a top priority. Found someone had tried removing the outer lens(possibly for bulb replacement?), and it was not quite clipped in to the main housing. I then removed it fully to find it was held together with some sort of adhesive. I put it back together, but I think I will have to get some adhesive for it to do it properly. Also the reflector that is built into the outer lens was full of water. Not sure how it got in as it didn't seem to want to come out. I will figure it out I'm sure. Also some water in the spare tire well after washing, but I think it could be from the tail light issues as well.
This car is really pretty clean like I said. The paint is not great with lots of swirls, and tree sap on it, but I think it can be mostly salvaged. Sunroof doesn't seem to want to work, and the right side head light is a little wonky on going down. Stereo display is screwed up, and you can't read it. Speakers pop, and sound cruddy at anything above a certain volume. Power antenna goes up and down. Fog lights work. Auto seat belts work, but the right side one is a little wonky. Spare tire has never seen the ground. Jack, and tools are all virgin. Fiber board around the jack storage area is perfect. Carpets are perfect. Rear storage area cover is perfect, and complete. Engine fired right up(with a jump box), but I had a little scent of fuel at one point. I hope to get it up on some jack stand to look around underneath later tonight.
Still need to figure out where to work on it, and if it's worth saving. Also if I decide to fix it, I will need lots of advice, and some lessons in welding.
I have a few pictures, but it seems that Photobucket doesn't let you link to their site anymore as all of my pics here seem to be gone.
Get a new tub and swap everything over. As painful as it is and sentiments aside, Not worth saving what you got.
Anyone see these cars at their local salvage yards? If so can you buy a chunk of "frame rail", or would they have to sell the whole chassis? Keep your eyes open folks.
Hey guys, for the challenge does the cost of sales tax, and any other state fees for a vehicle count toward the budget? I ask because I had to pay sales (six and a quarter percent)tax on $4750 book value of the RX-7 even though I paid a lot less than that for the car. That plus $75 to get the title in my name is all I have in it so far. Can I only recoup the cost of the purchase, or the fair market value? Or is what I paid the fair market value? I'm confused because the MA DMV says it's worth a whole lot more than the reality of my purchase price, and there is no disputing that with the DMV.
