Yep. Just because i can remember to check the oil on the car doesn't mean i'll remember to put the fill cap back on. Brilliant! Second time in 4 months.

Heh, I've done that on a motorbike - with the oil coming out of the filler cap nicely waterproofing my boot and trousers.

Yeah... i just hope too much didn't spray out. This head is already in terrible shape, noisy as hell, and the seals are all shot. Still too cold for me to want to dump the new motor in. Bummer.

Now that everything is oiled down, hopefully the bolts will come loose easily when you do the motor swap.

Haha, yes.... but the whole damn car was pretty much apart just this past summer/fall, so stuck bolts isn't a problem anyways.

This thing has been one of the worst purchases i've ever made, and i'm sick of trying to fix and maintain the old abused BP. So i'm just saying screw it and ripping the entire thing out and then we'll be looking for a 300+whp Escort.

Don't get me wrong, i love the car, i just paid too much for it, and should have given up on this motor when i first got it, could have had it swapped already.

When I did that, I tried to think of it as free rustproofing. I didn't convince myself.

I've completed an oil change, filled the car back up with oil........and then noticed a splashing sound coming from underneath the car....

DOH!!! Forgot to put the drain plug back in! There goes 4qts of perfectly good oil.

Don't feel bad. Everyone gets brain fade occasionally.

If you put the fluid cap(s) where the hood latch goes, it will keep this problem from happening because you won't be able to close the hood and go about your day without reinstalling the cap. Of course, if you try to close the hood you'll probably damage your cap, but that's a lot better than running out of fluid for whatever the cap was on.

Yeah... it seems to have only lost about half a quart, so no biggie. Just smells kindof weird at stoplights now. Still runs as fine as it ever did.

That of course, meaning, it burns a ton of oil, but seems to have freakish amounts of power. Seems sad that if i put this horribly ailing motor in my Celica, it would drop a second and a half off the quarter mile time. Go figure.

I've done it too - on the wifes car, made a mess but no issue - the silly cap was just sitting there on the valve cover and everything.

Lot better than what I used to do. Take off filler cap to add oil. Put filler cap on top of air cleaner (big old carbed V8). Add oil. Slam hood shut.

I did that too. but I put my 710 cap on the washer fluid reservoir. shut the hood and "crunch". the best part was when I went to the junk yard to get a "new" WFR, the guy tried to argue with me about the price that HE (it was the owner) listed on car-part.com! I got it for the price listed, but gimme a break. great thing is, the "new" one is now cracked from age as well. awesome buy there.

Oh, yeah. First oil change on my Corrado, I was so stoked I got the cartridge type filter off without creating a mess on the ground that I forgot to drain the rest of the oil out of the crankcase before adding the new stuff. For those of you who don't know early VR6s, that's 12 quarts of (now) dirty oil. Good thing I hadn't switched to the synthetic yet...

I decided to change the oil in my probe one night before going out to dinner, and noticed I could get it done quicker without lifting the car up. I had just enough room to get the drain plug out and slide the drain pan under. Unfortunately I forgot to change the filter which was hanging right about my head. So my short cut became twice as long.

My g/f was amazed that I could change the oil on her 93 Bravada much quicker than I can change it on any of my cars...and then she figured out on her own that I didn't have to lift the thing to get to the plug, or lower it to get back to the (stock factory) remote filter.

Now she expects me to do it while the engine's still hot...

Think I told this one before, but here is my favorite dumb oil mess story.

I was draining some really dirty oil, put the pan under the car, and pulled the drain plug. The pan was one of those enclosed deals, with a small opening on top that funnels oil into the container. When pulling the plug I dropped it, right onto this hole.

Realizing I dropped the plug, I yanked the container out to grab the plug before it fell inside. Got the plug, breathed a sigh of relief, and realized all the oil in the car was still dumping out onto the street.

I have the natural ability (no matter what car I'm working on) to step in the oil pan ... which is messy and sometimes hot and messy!

I had a buddy fill the engine in his 82 Caddy full of oil.

"I changed my oil today and its running kind of weird."

I thought "Oh God, you forgot the oil."

Nope. He filled it. Full. Kept adding until he saw it. Full up to the valves.
