Many lust after the Alfa. What's the most affordable "semi-exotic" Italian V6 that actually has some performance potential? Is there one?

Semi-Exotic Italian V6 in the States?
Do you have a choice other than Alfa V6 and Maserati Biturbo? Fiat Dino V6 isn't affordable I don't think.
I've had both a Milano 2.5 and Biturbo. The Milano is much more eager to rev. The Biturbo obviously makes way more power (especially with non-functioning wastegates! weeeeeee!)
The Alfa V6 is very smooth - the Biturbo idles like a Harley (the 90* V6 is odd-fire)
Quad-cam Alfa 3.0 in the 164 was rated around 220hp, right? Seems like a good place to start. Doubt there's anything affordable to do to these engines in the States though, I would imagine a full set of cams would be very costly. Maybe up the compression with a head milling?
The quad came is a rare and expensive beast. One would be much better off doing forced induction on a SOHC car.
The 164S that I test drove earlier this year was quick, and rolling into the throttle, even from a roll, was a giggle-fest.

This. It's one of the most exotic sounding V6s i've heard, and it's EASILY found for peanuts.
And won't kill your wallet.
If you want something a little deeper sounding, consider a JE-ZE.
The motor out of the 164S or a 164LS would be sweet, though the noise that the 2.5 6 in my old GTV-6 was nice.

KLDE (1993-1997) U.S.
164 horse power with 156 ft/lb torque Compression ratio of 9.2:1 84.5 mm bore, 74.2 mm stroke Uses OBD-I through 1995 1996-1997 OBD-II 220cc Fuel injectors If you have a stock 1993-1997 Probe GT, 626 V6, or an MX-6 V6 you have a KLDE.

It's like a klze but not quite as good in stock form.
There's a few variations of the motor. We can just call it the "kl" for simplicity's sake.

you better belive the Fiat Dino V6 is not affordable. Rust did not kill those beautiful cars.. ferrari Dino owners killed them to replace the blown up engines in their Ferraris
The Alfa 24v v6 can be had cheap, it's just that the parts are really expensive. You can get cams, high compression pistons and headers for the single cam 3.0, that would be the easiest/cheapest, or go for forced induction if you want over 220hp or so.

On vacation the first time this came up....
So, we owned an LS for a decade, and 'borrowed' a S when the LS was in the shop. I take that back, it wasn't even an S- just a good base 164.
I would go with the non 24V engine. Yes, it made more power, but the way the base 3.0 made power was much better to live with. Great engine.
Getting the S cams in the engine- great combo- almost as much power as the LS 4V, but with the driveablilty of the 2V engine.
