Crap now it's 2/26...
I melted a piston in my 81 step side half ton with a Clifford intake and "twin turbo" conversion. My dad and I rigged it up from junkyard crap. Engine was an as pulled 225 from a junkyard duster, it was a lot of fun untill I was on i80 by Annawan Illinois and it popped, 3spd w/od. Long wait for a tow truck...
Pics if I can find and scan them...
I drove home 6 miles from a police auction in a late 70's Volare with a slant six that had a grapefruit sized hole in the block with a nubbin of connecting rod spinning around through it. Didn't even lose much oil on the trip and ran pretty good.
I have a spreadsheet detailing how a salvage Viper can achieve LeMons budget- it involves swapping in a slant 6
In reply to mightymike:
It's basically "sell everything". Drivetrain, interior, pull molds off body panels and remake your own, sell wheels, etc. etc.
Then of course, in goes the 225/ 3 on the tree, rear leaf springs, and live axle
I can give you the full thing if you want, although it's based on one particular salvage car and part prices from a few years ago.
Yah, but it's not just what it is/was, it's about what it is/was in. In my case I was in high school and my dad had a Dodge Dart with this engine... Oooo, but wait, it wasn't just a Dart, it was a Dart Swinger. Sorry guys, but nothing said "birth control" louder than a dead stock refrigerator-white Dart. Yes the engine lasted 225,000 miles - until dad was bringing home another 400 lbs of bricks in the trunk and there was a big bang and automatic transmission fluid all over the road and lots of smoke, but I digress. Anyhow, it certainly wasn't a date-getter... or maybe it was me.
Nice reference to parental planning "Sorry guys, but nothing said "birth control" louder than a dead stock refrigerator-white Dart."
My parents used a variety of automotive birth control devices on me as well including an 86 Mazda 323 auto, an 86 toyota pickup (4 wheeled rust), and an 80something firenza that lasted two weeks.
I fully intend to apply this logic to mine when the time comes. It will be in GRM style though...
Oh the smoothness, oh the joy.
Oh how the damn oil climbs the block in the long left-handers, and you spin the bearings.
