Considering when the Contour SVT came out all of the car mags thought they were very close to the M3 of the day I am also confused by the POS comment.

The E36 was introduced in the early 90's and the X-type was introduced in the early 2000's, that is hardly a fair comparison. By your own admission, the X-type's competitor, the E46 is better...and it also came out a few years before the X-type.
Also, if you read my comment of "SVT aside," I do hold appreciation for the SVT Contour, but much as a BMW M3 does not really represent a typical 3-series, the SVT Contour is a bit of a step up from a plain one. The regular old Contour never impressed me.
IMHO the X-type interior is super chintzy in person. Pictures don't convey the feel of hard plastic very well.

Thats dumb, just buy the turbo manifolds from Rossion, then twin turbo the 3L to hell and back, then laugh as you consume everything aside from the engine......sure beats ringland failure in my book....
I had a 2.5 sport sedan Xtype with a 5 speed. It was nice except the transfer case fluid is not easily changed (lifetime fill so they made the plugs inaccessible) so I sold it on. I bought it to sell years ago and it served it's purpose.
Slow, but sounded good and fun with the manual.
In reply to crankwalk:
They did that to the mtxIV on the sho's, you can always tell an enthusiest's car when you get under it, first thing you notice is a drilled and tapped hole with a drain plug in it.....
Don't see many around any more, pretty sure Jags of that era used terrible paint, weird to see a car from 2000s with clear coats totally failed, looks like the car got a bad sunburn. If you wax the paint the clearcoat will probably take a bit longer to fail.
Internet lore suggests the X-Type was argued to be a market flop, but was in fact a volume seller nonetheless compared the rest of Jaguar's lineup, and I see a (different) sedan on the road I think almost every day and still think, you know, that's not half bad looking.
I was tempted by an X-Type wagon in sport trim because of the depreciation, and it was such a nice size wagon and, aesthetically, seemed well designed.
Take a look at the X-Type owner forums, that's what changed my mind. The number bad stories told by advocates, much less critics, of the model changed my mind. If I buy an older XJ6 and have some headaches, I figure it goes with the territory. If I buy a car made within the last 10 years and have major problems, it doesn't take long for the love to fade and I would just as soon set it on fire.
Probably reason number 5 or 6 why I still drive my W123 diesel every day. Not much passion, but no betrayal either.

That exemplifies my problem. Left side of the brain keeps saying you have to hate it. The right side is yelling at the left saying I WANT IT!!!!!!
