Got my super cheap jeep project running this afternoon, a '93 Cherokee 4.0. During the motor swap I had to cut off the slapdash arrangement of different bits of pipe and an ill fitting muffler hanging from wires the PO chose to "install" and now I'm left with the open downpipe terminating right before the transmission crossmember. Needless to say, this setup is very, very loud. My inner redneck loves it, my wife and neighbors will not.
I've got a 2" pipe to work with, I don't care if it makes it all the way to the rear bumper but I need to make it somewhat reasonable sounding.
I was thinking of using something like a cherry bomb with a turn-down before the rear axle. Will this still be insanely loud and crappy?
IMO yes, it will still be very loud and not good sounding. I've driven around in 4.0L Jeeps without exhaust (intentional and not) a few times over the past 13 years of owning various XJs. They can sound ok at idle, but they get VERY loud with just a tip in. I've had a Borla full off the shelf system (AWESOME sound and fitment), a Magnaflow 2.5" muffler from a buddy's Mustang GT welded in place of the stock muffler (good sound but a little drone), and I'm now running an off the shelf Dynomax system on my '99 (ok sound, very quiet, good fitment).
If you're trying to keep it cheap I would purchase a new or used muffler (2-2.5" center in and offset out) and stick it in with the 2" pipe you have. The Dynomax systems are under $150 though so if you just want to save the hassle I recommend that.

I bought a used borla muffler and had a local shop weld the rest up (my welder was busted at the time). They charged me next to nothing to do it and it sounds great.
I was going to recommend Borla. I've heard many Jeeps with Borla exhaust. Man does it sound sweet. But go to 2.5" if you can.
love the 4.0 + Borla - but it's not really gra$$root$

I paid $40 for the used Borla muffler on my cherokee.

Well, I ended up using a 2' pipe, a generic cheap turbo muffler, and a turndown. The muffler is pretty close to the stock location and pretty well out of the way. I pointed the turndown down and out the side to try to get the noise out from under the truck a little.
It's loud and surprisingly deep. I sort of like it, sounds great WOT. It drones like crazy inside the cab but for this things beater application I don't really care.
