I don't think Rancho shocks were ever good units.

I did buy some for my truck a few years ago. Those adjustable ones that got some rave reviews from Peterson offroad or such. They are fading rapidly. Overly harsh on small bunch, wallowy soft on big ones. Weird shocks.

the cheap ranchos are just as crappy as any other cheap shock. the rs5000 or whatever are decent from what i've heard, or you could spring for billsteins.

i had monroe sensatracs on a ranger that handled really well, they would firm up on sharp, short bumps, but stayed softer on long, slower movements. so they were firm, without being harsh all the time.

later i had a set of gabriel ultras on my f150, which made it ride like a lumber truck.

Old Man Emu makes pretty awesome suspension packages so you may want to look there.

I changed my '94 Ranger to Bilsteins when it hit about 40K miles. I must have done something wrong when I installed them as the first week I had them on the truck they made me ill after just a few miles on the local freeway. But that disappeared after the first week and they proceeded to ride as good or slightly better than the OEM shocks the truck came with.
