I pull it with the bell housing by undoing the 4 bolts that connect it to the impeller tube and then sliding the motor forward (why I remove the radiator) off the impeller shaft. I have never taken one apart that way. I bet getting the motor lifted out was easier as you had about 8 more inches of clearance to work with.

The pressure plate failed. And it has the old style clutch disk. Unlikely its been replaced. More pics later gotta go to work.

AHA! NOT a new clutch, huh? Interesting. Good work!

So how / who told you the clutch was replaced. That is the first time I have seen that failure in a 944. The disks usually go south before that happens. Was just the disk replaced?

Nope the disk was an old rubber type. See this is an old GRM'ers car. He (swarfalot) passed away from cancer and this car sat around. Every one told me he had it replaced and had bought the new yokohama es100 tires on it just before he got really sick. If I had heard it from his mouth, Id believe it. I didn't so I'm not faulting any one, it just is what it is.

So, the past 4ish years its mostly been sitting around. It wasn't abused when it was driven around either, so i'm not sure what happened. Looks like theres a dozen holes for crap to get into the bellhousing though, and I'm wondering if something got in there and when I pushed the clutch in, it snapped that band.

So all new clutch parts are on order. Plus the oil cooler gasket (which was already a 1 piece), and the oil pan gaskets, and some other stuff.

Doing bearings while you got the motor out? A water pump is also MUCH easier as are all the seals. Once a 944 motor is out the "while you are there" list Can get out of hand fast.

Sounds like the clutch was going to be replaced and just never happened. I have done things like that. I park a car and have a to do list. 3-4 years later the to do list and the to done list kind of merge in my mind if you know what I mean. Also If chemo was involved you get "chemo brain" that tends to muddle things up. Absolutely no fault should be placed anywhere. I was just asking out of curiosity.

This is about the last thing we needed to do to make this car perfect mechanically. We did the timing belt/water pump, belts, tuneup, all that stuff last summer. Also changed the tranny fluid, ps pump/fluid, etc etc all that stuff. The interior was torn out, reconditioned, new tan seats that were re upholstered, full repaint, etc. We just thought the clutch was new and solid, so when it started not shifting we were kinda puzzled. Not blaming any one for that, obviously getting over cancer is far more important, it was just a WTF moment.

Now that the motors out, we are dong all the little stuff I wanted to do last summer, like replacing the vac lines, coolant lines, intake manifold gaskets, oil cooler was done once, but we are redoing it any way, that kind of stuff.

Now only If we can find a 951 parts car....

PM me - I'm seriously considering parting with my 951 track beater project and grabbing an E46 M3 instead, and I'm only a half day's drive away...

Interesting. I sent you a message, I'm not exactly sure how GRM's PM system works but I gave it a try.
