a) I was young and foolish as opposed to being eerr middle aged and foolish now.
b) In the years when Mansell had no chance and Prost was at McLaren I ALWAYS rooted for him over the cheating tool Senna.

c) Now when Prost replaced Mansell first at Ferrari, then at Williams I had a serious issue with the slimy little toad, but we've made up since perrier and champagn all around when we're together for drinks. I just need to pursuade him he's wrong and that Michigan can produce a good sparkling Chardonnay even if we can't put Champagn on the bottle.

I've always preferred Senna to Prost, but I don't have the animosity towards Prost that some nutjob Senna fans have. I disliked some of his decisions and attitude, but I recognize that Senna also had some attitude. I was always torn on Schuey, he was so damn quick, but such an ass on track. And I've never really liked Ferrari that much

I was a big Senna fan. His rise in F1 coincided with me becoming interested in it, whereas guys like Prost and Piquet had been around and won titles beforehand. In the last few years, I've come to temper some of that fandom because I now look back at some of the dirty stuff he did on track and I can't condone it. But man, when he was on, he was magic, and that was when you could still see the driver actually driving the car. In that movie there's a scene of him testing the JPS Lotus that's just visual poetry.

Now re-watching the races I can find, I don't like Schumi at all. Funny how age puts a perspective on things. I view things very differently now.

But, first off, I always liked Damon Hill. He's a bit grayer now, as am I, but he's all class just like Mansell- unlike me!

The first year Mansell came to Indy Car I loved it. Just when it seemed he couldn't gain a position, I would say to friends "just wait, he will come into a corner, brake late, and leave the guy wondering how he got past him. IIRC it took the Amis half a season before they figured it out!

Also, bear with me, I worked the Detroit Grand Prix during his first season in Indy Car. I think I was 17 and I had a pit and paddock pass. Newman-Hass was my only stop. I bided my time, watched Nigel put his balaclava on, the front of his car cleared of people, and I stepped out to take his picture as he was strapping his helmet. He looked right at me! I then turned to scoot away before I got yelled at and I ran square into the back of Paul Newman. He looked at me and I sheepishly said "I'm sorry sir." He smirked at me and said "It's fine kid." It was like I was in a movie...

Anymore in F1, just like in the Schumi Ferrari days, I root for the smaller teams. I wish now I would have spent more time watching teams like Jordan.

Was and still am a Mansell fan, just I now recognize Prost as the better all-rounder. I loved it when Mansell went to Indy car and won. What people forget about him going back to F1, was that at the end of 94 he came back for three races with Williams before signing for McLaren in 95. In those three races he retired, got a 4th and then won the last race.

Those that know me already know what I’m about to say Yes I can be a bit of a broken record. Schumi is a bigger tool than Senna. He didn’t win the 94 WDC, he stole it while driving an illegal car. Damon Hill is the rightful winner if Schumi hadn’t punted him off the track in his normal low life cheating manor. Once I’m benevolent dictator to the universe and once Schumi has fully recovered from his skiing accident I’m going to punch him in the face, take the 94 WDC trophy from him and give it to the rightful winner

Smaller teams yes. I spend as much time monitoring Caterham and Marussia as I do the big boys. I remember at Silverstone in 88, you could get pit lane access on Saturday then, I have more photo's in a box somewhere of the Zakspeed, Coloni, Euro Brun and Osella cars than I do of the front runners.

If you like the little guy and you're not yet familiar with the site head over to F1 Rejects The have great profiles of the 'reject' teams and drivers I used to root for in the 80's and early 90's. I just long for the days of pre-qualifying and the no hope teams trying desperatly to get a shot at the 26th spot on the grid.

Another book recommendation, then. If, like Adrian and I, you romanticize the late 80s-early 90s F1 and the smaller teams of that era, you should check out "Flat Out Flat Broke" by Perry McCarthy.
