While surfing different websites, I came across a few folks who were running down the Nissan KA24 at least as it was used in the (early?) Altimas. I have seen one or two 1st gen. Altimas in my area that look kind of decent and I've always liked that "lower cost" J30 vibe they have going for them.

Apparently, a weak point with the Altima (and perhaps also the Hardbody?) is the intake manifold (supposedly it's another one of those crap-plastic deals?) and in some cases the fuel system. Anyone with direct experience with this engine that can tell me if the intake and/or fueling/carb is reliable? Can it be replaced with something else? (Sorry, haven't tried Nissan Motorsports, yet.)

With guys putting out a few hundred horsepower in a KA powered S chassis, I don't think you'll have a hard time finding a good system rather quickly.

The intake manifold on the 1st gen Altimas is not plastic. No KA has a plastic manifold. I remember the older ones were known for distributor issues, but all in all they are stout cars. The first couple years of the 2nd gen (ie, 98-99), it wasn't uncommon for the intake gasket to spring a leak, usually down near cylinder 4. Not the most fun job to do, but those Altimas are butt ugly anyway, so no biggie. The KA is a stout motor, and I think you'd be pleased with the first gen one, as long as you aren't expecting a race car. Oh, and they are a TON easier to work on than a stinkin' J30!!

Don't think that would work in an FWD Altima...would be cool though!
