Maybe look at it another way. If you spent $3500 in 30 months it’s really just like a $117 a month car payment. Maybe not that bad?

I had 60k mile, well maintained, one owner S10 with the same amount of steering slop as you describe, Curtis. OEM tie rod ends and drag link (I think that is the term), plus steering shaft rag joint were all completely shot. Granted, this was a Chevy and not your Ford, but these small trucks were built to a low cost to be price competitive yet still yield some profit, so I suspect crap quality factory parts from day 1 were not uncommon.

Unfortunately, I feel your pain. I bought my wife a 07 Highlander a couple years ago, Since she was staying home taking care of her mom while I went to jobs. Only had 120K on it... Hey, its a Toyota, should be good to go, right? I never has left her stranded, or needed a tow, but always needed something when I couldn't work on it myself. So... all the trips to the shop total up to almost what we paid for it! And it only gets about 17 mpg 'round here, and 18 - 19 on the hwy. But the mechanics that look at it say its running fine. You mean they all have the flat spots? But I'm too deep into it to want to cut my losses.
I saw you had asked about the 4.0 in the Fiata; you and I might be able to work something out there...bad plan, but I can't help myself!
