I happen to be a big fan of home-brew "specials".....probably because I'm a closet-hotrodder but also, I've always had an affinity for the Austin 7 "specials" built in the '20s and '30s.

So when I saw this thing racing at the Watkins Glen ~VRG vintage event~ last weekend, I had to get a closer look.

The owner, a friendly Canadian from the VARAC club, told me he'd built it in 1967!

And owned it three times!

He calls it "Kiki" (not sure why) and someone else told me later on there even a second Kiki somewhere. The most recent purchase came about because he saw it languishing in a field and hated to see it go to waste. He has fully restored it to it's original glory (or maybe even better than that....it looks great). It has a Ford V8 with a handbuilt frame and a Chevy II rear axle. Part of the front axle is Triumph (I think) plus many other mix-and-match parts. It runs like a scared rabbit. A real grassroots project with genuine vintage pedigree to boot.

Nice! I also like the vintage F1-looking thing in the second pic.
