Just returned from Laguna Seca and the ALMS championship. This was my first time at a professional racing event. I won the trip at a charity auction (Smile Train). My son and I got to spend the weekend with the Patron Highcroft team. Both David Brabham and Scott Sharp were very relaxed and happy to talk about the car, strategy, ALMs, etc. The team owner, Duncan Dayton is an extremely accomplished driver himself, holding a record eight wins at Monaco (vintage racing). Both my son, who is 13, and I did multiple laps at speed on track, spent time in the pits and even had the opportunity to join the team on the podium during the awards. So I am just giving props to the entire organization and their generosity of time during such an important weekend for them.
And the racing was fantastic.
It is an awesome track to hang out at.
I went two years ago and it was a lot of fun. We were sitting around the bend from the cork screw, and all of a sudden a motorcycle cop comes wheeling through the crowd with lights on. We followed a few minutes later to see what was going on and found this emergency:
Think it was about 80mph
They had good beer too, and cheap. I live closer to Long beach and they only have overpriced Tecate... There was a booth with 5 or 6 good micro brews in a commemorative 16 or 20 oz mug for like $12
The cork screw is amazingly steep.
A couple of years ago at Road Atlanta, a group of friends and i were standing behind a guy holding a radar speed gun at the kink on the back straight, getting speeds on this gun. The LMP1 cars were doing about 180 to 190, the GTS cars were doing about 170, the GT cars doing about 160. Whenever the Audi R10 came by (both of them), the radar gun would say "ERROR", dont know if it was the paint on the car or what, but EVERYTIME, it couldnt grab a speed on them... Wild.
