Or more specifically, this one.
I've been looking around for a beater/project 4x4 for a while now. I had pretty much settled on an XJ when this sucker popped up. Anything I should know? Nice price or crack pipe? I need something to attach to my new roof rack!
Well, they apparently have the longest automatic transmission shift lever ever installed on a vehicle.

Decidedly a "pro," I hate reaching down to shift!
I had an FJ 60 for years, great vehicle but with a very serious drinking problem. The best I ever got was 14mpg, usually around 12, the slush boxes are of course worse. I finally couldn't take it any more so I swapped in a 3B four banger diesel from a Canadian market wreck.
Much better -- faster (once I turbo'd it), but a rough SOB at idle. It did get over 20 mpg though, and we ran it for another 4 years and 80k miles until it rusted out from under us. Still miss it --- a little.
Look into transfer cases. They are very expensive. The old FJ40's haven't been in production for years and are about 4-5k to replace. I don't know about the FJ60 but probably not much cheaper.
FJ60/62s are cooler than hotlinking. Do it and do it quickly. If you want a stick, you won't find one in a FJ62, they are auto only. FJ60s are stick only but they have the carb motor, not the FI one found in 62s.
You know the thread about Amsoil, and the cult that surrounds it? Land Cruiser owners not only drink the Koolaid, they bathe in it.
There's a lot to know about 60 series Landcruiser but the most important thing to know ,especially if you plan to buy a beater, is RUST!!!!!! They're mechanistically bullet proof so and the issue is they don't wear out they rust out. Be very weary of rust on the rear fenders. It's normally a very good indicator of the condition of chassis and spring mount. I love these truck to death but here in Canada it's almost impossible to find a good one and then if you do plan to play a premium.
If you do plan on buying one there's a fantastic buyers guide here.
I looked at them a couple years ago, for what they are they are $$$$$$$, and quite alot of them are on their 2nd engine with fairly low miles.
Ya'll are a bunch of enablers!
I go check it out this evening.
I've got an FJ55, the wagon model before the FJ60/62.
IH8mud is the best vehicle specific forum I've ever used. There are some seriously talented DIYers over there.
FJ62 has the 3FE fuel injected straight-6 engine which was also used in early FJ80's (1990-about 1993). All came with an automatic transmission and 4.11 gears in the axles. FJ60's came with ~3.79's, so the 62 axles are desirable amongst rock crawlers. Axle parts and brake parts should be pretty much interchangeable between FJ40's, FJ55's, FJ60's and FJ62's depending on the year. I think the 60/62's all had A/C standard from the factory.
Watch out for rust! Rear quarter panels, all fenders, and rocker panels. The good news, is that there are some pretty sweet ideas for removing rusty panels to turn them into Body Armor over on Ih8mud, so check those out if it's a real rust bucket.
Also, beware of smog equipment. If you live in a non-emission control state, it's no big deal, but they have to pass smog tests in most places. If you see a bunch of loose hoses, missing equipment, etc under the hood, run away.
Be prepared for some of the most fanatical owners on the planet as well. If you want to have a lot of fun, tell another Land Cruiser owner that you think jeeps are cool. Fisticuffs normally ensues.
Good luck, and I can answer any questions you might have after you go look at the thing.
If you're gonna get it just so you can put a roof rack on it, by all means do it. But don't forget the big mud flaps and a bunch of aux. lights and go safari-ing. I love to have one.
Oh my: http://austin.craigslist.org/cto/1691854910.html
When it rains, it pours!
Double roof racks for double awesomeness!
Busts, the both of them.
There's a nice one in Dallas I've got my eyes on. Having driven two, I now want one, bad.
Update: I may have...uh... made an awesome mistake.
Pics! Bought one of the two in the ads or another one?
