in the space of 20 hours, I took my rover up to Lake Champlain and back to retrieve my Sailboat. 400 some odd miles up and 400 some odd miles back. One tank of fuel to get there, and 1 1/2 to get back.

Towing 3500 pounds of boat and 1000 pounds of trailer.

Aside from a leaking exhaust collector gasket from where I replaced the starter (had to drop the exhaust) She preformed flawlessly there and back. While discos can be a little darty at highway speeds on bumpy and uneven roads.. (and the thruway is definatly uneven and bumpy) all that weight behind her smoothed the ride right out.

And yes, because pics or it didn't happen:

I will post up more tomorrow when I get them off of the camera. This one was on the phone

What's the joke about Land Rover Disco ownership? The two happiest days -- the day you buy it, and the day you sell it? Oh wait, that's about boat ownership . . .

Seriously, that's a pretty sailboat . . .

On the ride back through the adirondacks and Catskills.. and even on some the larger hills the Garden State Parkway goes over in Northern NJ.. I found myself constantly rowing back and forth from Drive to 3. I generally left the Cruisecontrol on (or I would find myself going faster than I wanted to do towing) and whenever the speed just started to drop, I would push it back to three to force a downshift.

When I first got onto 87 up in Westport NY. I was immediatly faced with one of the toughest climbs on that road. It had a far right lane for "slower traffic" and I found myself in that lane labouring up the mountain. By the top I could smell oil, but it must have been blowby from the engine working so hard for so long as I never smelled it again and I didn't seem to lose any.

For towing.. I probably should have gotten an F250 or so.. but then, after almost 18 hours in the saddle yesterday, I would not have been just stiff today from sitting. I would have been sore too. The Disco is a very nice place to spend time

Buy the best you can find. I got mine for 7 grand with only 70,000 miles on it. It was not too badly abused

LOL I was looking at a 900.00 obo one the other day thinking, at less than a grand I can get most my $$ back out if I scrap it, and a LS swap wouldn't hurt that much at that entry point.

I find this a little hard to believe with some of the moderns trucks. Sure my 95 one ton Dodge would beat you up, but I've ridden in some plush newer 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, and 1 tons recently.

Currently in nh up in the White Mountains. There's a Discovery with 31" mud tires and fully loaded roof rack from... Utah!

Quite a long way from home!

for what I paid for my Disco.. the F250 would have been early 90s. I only paid 6 grand for the Rover
