the later 4.6 Bosch "Thor" engine is a lot better as far the injection goes. It's definitely a bundle of snakes under the hood

We bought our 99 4.0 XJ with 50k miles on it, completely stock, and got 19 average. Then I lifted it 5.5 inches and put 33inch tires on it and it dropped to 14.
This one's running 29.5" tires and is lifted 2". The speedo is off by about 5%, so I guess I'm getting slightly better than 16. It's a 1990 so the EFI isn't as sophisticated as a 1999 model would be. I did notice that running the trans in "comfort" instead of "power" made a significant difference to economy. This is on a commute that's pretty much constant 40 mph running for 30 minutes, so hard acceleration and high speed drag are not major factors.
