Land Speed Racing in Florida 1 mile @ Dade Collier airport

EDIT: SIGN UPS FILLED saw rumors about this on another forum and then it was announced that it was going to happen. I called to do some investigating because it's not far from me and I may run it. They're using a 10,500 foot runway. According to the event coordinators they'll be allowing any production vehicle. No Funny cars, drag cars, or motorcycles. Safety equipment requirements seem almost non existant other than a rollbar for convertibles. See this site for more info http://www.milemarker-1.com/

Hmmm...that might be fun. I have a rollbar, too. I think the turbo Miata could hit terminal velocity within a mile.

Damn. Sure would be nice if I could take an extra week off at Challenge time.

It's the day after the Challenge. You don't need a whole week! You could leave straight from the Challenge banquet Saturday night.

That is in the MIDDLE of the Everglades!! Gator central. I think it's funny that they misspelled Ochopee, as that is the smallest post office in the US, something like 8'x8'. Really. This airport was used to train pilots of commercial jets on touch and gos. I have driven past it many times and will be there for this adventure!

They're offering an early sign up for $100.00 till the end of this week. After that $150.00.

I think the DirtE30 will be making it for this event since we live in Ft. Lauderdale. I'm guessing an all-night drive back after the challenge is gonna be in order. If anyone else from the challenge is interested as well maybe we can setup a caravan or something.

Where did you find info on the 100 dollar early registration. I want to register but wouldn't mind saving a few bucks.

They've set up a running list of the sign ups for this event with each cars info.

The sign ups are filled up and they've set up a waiting list. GM High Tech Performance is signed up with 2 cars and rumored to be doing a story on the event. It looks like a lot of very high buck iron is going to be there. Modified GT500's, AMG's hotted up ZO6's. Fun will be had, and undoutedly expensive carnage.

Ya, a lot of expensive hardware for sure! I'll be one of the "slow" guys by the looks of it. Who cares? It'll be fun to run and then watch all the big dollar cars go for it!

I just hope no one is hurt. There's very minimal safety equipment required.... VERY minimal.

the Texas mile has been going on for about 5yrs. fastest street car,,(yup, 1993 Toyota Supra, 246mph in the mile). Vipers and vettes fall in around 210-230mph, thats the good ones. some crazy dragster did like 250 or somthing , but he cant drive it very far on the street.

they should have something like trailer queens and driven to the track cars.(with no cheating) and of course safety checks.

All serious hi-speed events, the weak link is tires

I don't think common sense will prevail. With over a hundred entrants, and figuring an average of 3-4 minutes per run, we'll probably get two runs max. So everyone will run full out on their first pass. My guess is that many of the entrants have never gone over 150 MPH since they appear to be mostly street cars with only a couple using the 4 digit LSR numbers (if they're even designated LSR #s).

Many probably don't even know you can't just "lift" at speeds approaching 200 or you can upset the car and spin.

I emailed back and forth with Max the organizer about safety. I told him I didn't want to preach and suggested that there's very good reasons rollbars etc. are required over 135 at sanctioned LSR events. Explained that I have a cage, fire systems etc and that my car has safety equipment for faster speeds than I can currently go. In my last mail I stated that if there was any question of track preparation or the safety personel I'd just watch and take pictures.
